Hotel Flint by Marte.Marte Architects: A Modern Urban Landmark with Historical Roots
Hotel Flint blends historic charm and modern elegance, offering luxury suites, panoramic views, and eco-conscious design in Dornbirn, Austria.
At the end of Dornbirn’s Bahnhofsstraße, Hotel Flint, designed by Marte.Marte Architects, stands as a remarkable urban landmark combining modern architecture with historical preservation. The renovation integrates the former Hotel Josef Weiss villa with a striking new complex, creating an engaging dialogue between the past and the present. The site now offers a blend of luxury suites in the restored villa and compact, stylish apartments with panoramic views, making it an ideal retreat for urban explorers and business travelers alike.

Design Concept: A Blend of Old and New
The design harmoniously bridges the gap between the historic villa and the contemporary tower and podium. The nearly square tower, aligned with the neighboring building in both height and depth, complements the villa’s original charm. The podium mediates spatially between the new building and the existing structures, with the entrance square serving as a transition zone. The facade, crafted from high-precision concrete, creates a captivating play of light and shadow, adding a sculptural quality to the building.

A Rich Historical Legacy
The villa, once owned by Josef Weiss, a pioneer in South Tyrolean gastronomy, housed a well-known wine tavern and a bustling hotel. Over the years, the villa and its gardens witnessed multiple uses until Walter Feurstein, the current property owner, envisioned its transformation into a modern urban hub. Today, the villa accommodates six luxurious suites, retaining original elements such as wood paneling, cabinets, and a beautifully restored tiled stove, offering guests a glimpse into its rich heritage.

Luxurious Interior Spaces
Upon entering, guests are greeted by an elegant sequence of rooms, including a lobby, fireplace lounge, breakfast room, and bar. These semi-public spaces are adorned with historic black-and-white photographs, narrating stories of the site’s vibrant past. The ground floor seminar rooms connect to the revitalized villa, enhancing the fluidity between old and new. A shop facing the train station on the mezzanine floor revitalizes the former restaurant space, offering a contemporary touch.

Modern Amenities with Timeless Elegance
The spa on the first floor offers a serene escape, benefiting from soft, natural light filtering through the inner courtyard. The space balances introversion and intimacy with unexpected views of the bustling city, creating a unique wellness experience. Carefully curated light fixtures and sisal carpeting bring warmth and texture to the interiors, maintaining a visual connection to the villa’s refined aesthetics.
Diverse Accommodation Options
With 77 meticulously designed rooms, Hotel Flint caters to both short and long-term stays. Guests can choose between sophisticated suites with partitions, kitchenettes, and stone-clad bathrooms, or smaller, optimized rooms offering breathtaking three-directional views and unconventional yet functional bathroom designs. The compact tower layoutensures optimal use of space while maintaining a connection to the surrounding environment.

Outdoor Spaces and Urban Vibe
Despite the density of the new complex, the preserved villa and its surroundings offer picturesque outdoor seating areaswhere guests can enjoy warm summer evenings amidst urban charm. The site’s layout ensures that both ground-level and elevated views highlight the beauty of Dornbirn’s cityscape, creating an immersive urban experience.

Sustainable and Mobility-Focused Design
Designed with a mobility concept centered around train travelers, Hotel Flint promotes sustainable tourism by offering an array of compact, eco-conscious living spaces while maintaining a high standard of comfort and luxury. The seamless blend of history, modern design, and environmental awareness positions Hotel Flint as a benchmark for contemporary urban hospitality.
