House in Santa Marinha: Innovative Multi-Entrance Residential Design by Helder da Rocha Arquitectos
Modern Lousada home with three entrances, south-facing courtyard, daylight-filled interiors, seamless indoor-outdoor flow, and innovative spatial design by Helder da Rocha.
Located in Lousada, Portugal, the House in Santa Marinha by Helder da Rocha Arquitectos exemplifies a thoughtful approach to urban residential design, balancing spatial constraints with natural light and ventilation. Completed in 2022 and covering 230 m², this contemporary two-story home explores innovative entrance planning and courtyard integration within a limited urban plot.

The design challenge focused on creating three distinct entrances, a rare feature that became a defining aspect of the house. The architects embraced the complexity, treating each entry as a unique compositional and functional element. Despite standard urban limitations, the team emphasized the relationship between the building and the surrounding terrain, sculpting the exterior spaces to guide circulation and orientation naturally.

The home's rectangular footprint measures 10 by 14 meters, with a strategic south-facing patio introduced to reduce the building’s footprint, enhance daylight penetration, and provide cross-ventilation. On the ground level, street-facing rooms accommodate private functions, while the lower -1 floor opens to the landscape, inner courtyard, and two secondary entrances. This layered spatial arrangement allows for seamless indoor-outdoor living while maintaining privacy.

Materials and detailing were carefully considered. High-performance Cortizo windows frame views and maximize daylight, while subtle facade articulation integrates the home harmoniously into its context. Interior spaces emphasize light-filled, open areas with clear circulation, showcasing modern staircases and handrails as sculptural elements.
This project demonstrates that, with careful planning, even small urban plots can accommodate multiple entry points, diverse spatial experiences, and strong indoor-outdoor connections, all while maintaining aesthetic cohesion and functional clarity.
