Jeronimo House: A Harmonious Fusion of Pink Concrete and Vineyard Landscape by Stefano Riva Architetto
A pink concrete vacation home in Portugal blending restored granite walls, vineyard landscapes, and modern volumes to create serene indoor–outdoor living.
Jeronimo House, designed by Stefano Riva Architetto, is a stunning example of contemporary residential architecture rooted deeply in its natural and cultural context. Located in Barrô, Portugal, within the breathtaking Douro Barro region of Resende, the home sits in a landscape world-renowned for its terraced vineyards and dramatic granite formations. Completed in 2023, this 150 m² vacation home is a thoughtful restoration and reinterpretation of a once-ruined structure.

Reviving a Ruin Within a Historic Vineyard Setting
The property originally featured multiple old structures in varying stages of decay. Among them stood a near-forgotten ruin—only a single granite wall had survived time and weather. This wall, steeped in local history, became the anchor point for the new architectural vision.
For centuries, human hands shaped the Douro landscape using granite terrace walls to cultivate vineyards. This iconic geography often risks being overshadowed by incongruent architecture. In contrast, Jeronimo House embraces and elevates this setting, ensuring the design integrates seamlessly into the regional identity.

A Contemporary Structure Rooted in History
The architectural concept is defined by the contrast between pigmented pink concrete volumes and the restored granite wall. The main built form rises from the footprint of the original farm structure, while a planned underground section was reimagined when a massive granite rock unexpectedly surfaced during construction. This discovery led to a redesign that detached the volumes from the natural boundaries, creating internal courtyards and intimate outdoor areas.
The pink concrete, inspired by traditional hues found in the surrounding region, establishes a warm dialogue with the lush green vineyards. These spaces cultivate a unique relationship between interior and exterior, turning the old granite wall into a protective enclosure for a private garden.

Light, Landscape, and Seasonal Transformation
Jeronimo House unfolds across two levels:
- Ground Floor: A welcoming series of social spaces, including the kitchen and living room, opens toward curated landscapes and natural light.
- Upper Floor: Three bedrooms and a serene library offer elevated views of the garden and vineyards.
Between the concrete volumes, nature takes the lead. Trees and climbing plants will grow organically over time, subtly altering the play of light and shadow with each season. This evolving greenery reinforces the home’s commitment to blending architecture with landscape.

A Vision of Renewal and Natural Harmony
Through its sensitive restoration and bold contemporary character, Jeronimo House stands as a powerful example of architecture that respects heritage while embracing modern form. Its interplay of granite, pink concrete, and vineyard greenery creates a peaceful retreat that reflects both the land’s history and its future.
