Located in Kyiv, Ukraine, Kitsunya Bistro is a contemporary Asian-inspired dining space designed by Nastia Mirzoyan. Spanning 56 m² and completed in 2024, the project transforms a former nightclub into a vibrant bistro that blends modern minimalism with subtle Asian cultural references. Photographed by Yevhenii Avramenko, Kitsunya showcases adaptive hospitality architecture that responds to both urban dynamics and evolving social patterns.

Client Vision and Project Brief The transformation began after the previous tenant—a nightclub—struggled due to curfews and societal changes caused by regional conflicts. The new clients, in collaboration with a chef, envisioned a modern Asian bistro that could serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner patrons. With a limited budget, the design strategy retained existing structural elements such as the bar, while investing in high-quality custom furniture. The challenge was to create a vibrant, modern dining experience without relying on heavy decorative interventions.

Design Approach and Spatial Concept The design emphasizes versatility and multi-functional hospitality spaces. A minimalistic approach avoids traditional Asian ornamentation, instead integrating subtle nods to cultural elements. The layout features a classic Asian-style bar seating inspired by ramen shops, combined with standard dining tables to accommodate different group sizes. The space is designed to adapt seamlessly to changing atmospheres throughout the day, providing a dynamic and immersive dining experience.

Lighting Design Lighting plays a pivotal role in enhancing the atmosphere. In the morning, bright neutral lighting energizes the space, while warm amber tones create a cozy, intimate environment in the evening. The lighting design incorporates multiple layers: ceiling lights, wall sconces, linear accent lights, task-specific lighting, and floor lamps. Custom stainless-steel pendant lights and integrated bar console lighting create a cohesive, modern aesthetic. Textile elements inspired by “office for ordinary objects” and experimental upcycled floor lamps add creativity and warmth.

Materials and Aesthetic Choices Key materials were selected for their durability, functionality, and visual impact. Stainless steel balances the worn textures of the existing brick walls, while plywood tables and benches offer affordability and practicality. Linen fabrics in the bar and entrance areas introduce a dynamic, airy quality, moving gently with summer breezes. The bold blue X-Line chairs punctuate the neutral palette, creating visual interest. Custom furniture—including bar tables, stools, dining tables, and lighting—reinforces the unique identity of the space, while the restroom and hallway showcase playful design using reflective construction foil.

Design Philosophy Kitsunya Bistro reflects a balance between modern minimalism and subtle cultural storytelling. The integration of stainless steel, fabric, and color accents creates a grounded yet lively urban environment. The project demonstrates how thoughtful material selection and spatial planning can redefine small-scale hospitality architecture, delivering a distinctive dining experience without excess ornamentation.

Project Challenges The renovation faced several hurdles, including a shortage of labor due to military enlistments and frequent summer power outages, which delayed completion by approximately a month. Despite these challenges, the team successfully realized a high-quality, functional, and visually striking bistro that resonates with Kyiv’s urban fabric.
