From Sustainable Designs to Innovative Spaces: A Look at the Impressive Works in the Running for Europe's Most Prestigious Architecture Prize
The seven finalists for the 2022 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award have been announced by the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. The jury has selected five finalists in the Architecture category and two in the Emerging Architecture category. The winners will be announced at the end of April, and the awards ceremony will take place on 12 May at the Barcelona Pavilion.
The works selected for the awards encourage and serve as models for local city policies. They focus on new management models based on community and circular sustainability processes. The works also prioritize the productive and self-sufficient city developed in a pedagogical way, dignifying the space we inhabit and use. The finalists are also the result of well-developed construction processes and careful use of materials and details, creating a dialogue between monumentality, education, and heritage.

The five finalists in the Architecture category are the 85 Social Housing Units in Cornellà de Llobregat by peris+toral. architects in Barcelona, Frizz23 in Berlin by Deadline (Britta Jürgens + Matthew Griffin), The Railway Farm in Paris by Grand Huit and Melanie Drevet Paysagiste, the Town House at Kingston University in London by Grafton Architects in Dublin, and the Z33 House for Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture in Hasselt by Francesca Torzo.

In May, the shortlisted works, including the winners and finalists, will be open for public viewing, offering visitors an in-situ experience with the architects and those involved in the organization of the prize. The event will be called OUT & ABOUT EU Mies Awards, and it will be an opportunity for the public to interact with the architects and understand the design process.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Barcelona Pavilion on 12 May, and will include a series of debates and conferences directed at all audiences. The event will also include the presentation of the catalogue with all 532 nominated projects for the 2022 Prize, an exhibition, and an evening celebration open to everybody. The event will provide an opportunity for architects, academics, and the public to discuss contemporary architecture and its impact on society.
Overall, the 2022 EU Mies Awards will serve as a platform for showcasing the latest trends in contemporary architecture and highlighting the importance of community-focused, sustainable design practices. The awards provide a great opportunity for architects to connect with the public and showcase their innovative work.
