The Concept: Dynamic, Dual-Purpose Design

The Duo was envisioned as more than just a coffee shop or a bar—it’s a space tailored to meet diverse social needs throughout the day. DNA co-founder Tenzin Samphel described the vision as "a seamless balance between functionality and ambiance," ensuring the venue serves as a morning haven and an evening hotspot.

The Design Highlights

Maximizing Vertical Space with Innovation

Located in a space with 30-foot ceilings, the design team initially proposed a second floor. When the idea was declined, the team pivoted, opting to use the soaring vertical space creatively. The result was a breathtaking custom glass dragon installation—a twisting, floating sculpture illuminated by LED lights.

This centerpiece is more than decorative:

  • Dynamic Lighting: Equipped with color-changing LED lights, it transitions from subtle, natural tones during the day to vibrant hues at night, enhancing the dual-purpose ambiance.
  • Engineering Precision: Each glass segment, weighing over 80 pounds, is suspended by reinforced steel wires, meticulously aligned with a floor guide for structural integrity and aesthetic balance.

This dragon sculpture not only embodies the duality of The Duo but also establishes a distinctive identity, resonating with Flushing's young and social-media-savvy crowd.

  1. Dual-Bar Setup:A quick-service coffee bar at the front caters to the morning rush, offering efficiency for busy patrons. The back transforms into a mirrored cocktail bar, creating an immersive nighttime atmosphere for groups and social gatherings.
  2. Material Selection:A contemporary mix of stainless steel, light oak wood, brown leather, and gray boucle upholstery creates a warm yet sophisticated feel.Mirrored panels amplify the sense of space and reflect shifting lighting throughout the day, enhancing the transformative ambiance.Matte black accents add contrast, emphasizing the adaptability of the space.
  3. Mood Lighting:Lighting is a core design feature, with programmable settings transitioning from soft, welcoming tones by day to dynamic, energetic colors by night.

The design ensures The Duo is more than a beautiful space—it’s a functional, adaptive environment. During the day, the coffee bar caters to solo patrons and remote workers, offering a cozy, light-filled atmosphere.
