OASIS OF CULTURE
Transforming Aleppo: Where modern urban architecture meets cultural restoration for a resilient future.
What is an oasis? According to the dictionary, it means "a pleasant or peaceful area or period in the midst of a difficult or hectic place or situation." Inspired by this definition, our design concept revolves around the theme of an oasis. We aim to create a sanctuary where local people can find peace and happiness amidst the challenges of their daily lives.

"Reimagining Urban Architecture: Oasis of Peace in Aleppo"
Our project for the Oasis of Culture focuses on restoring and revitalizing the damaged urban fabric surrounding Aleppo's Citadel. This initiative, designed by Zsolt Vasáros DLA, Zsofia Garami, Gellert Barkanyi, and Imre Parocai, was submitted as an entry for the Institutional Excellence Award in Memory.

Spread of Green
The central purpose of our design program is to reintroduce greenery to the barren areas around Aleppo Citadel. This will not only contribute to environmental rehabilitation but also foster mental and emotional well-being for the community. Our detailed proposal outlines strategies to transform the devastated site of the Grand Serail into a vibrant, eco-friendly urban park.

A Network of New Facilities
The design integrates facilities symbolizing key aspects of human life: mind (library), body (oasis), spirit (mosque), social life (main square), trade (market), and food (restaurant). Together, these elements create a cohesive urban experience that commemorates Syria's rich cultural heritage while paving the way for a modern, resilient city center.
Proposal for the Site of the Grand Serail
Our vision transforms this historical site into a lush public park with recreational spaces cooled by vegetation and shaded by unique architectural structures. This park is designed to support education, culture, health, and community engagement.

The Oasis Design
The heart of the design is a central garden with pathways leading to a symbolic fountain, representing water as a source of life. Green spaces, inspired by the organic forms of nature, are complemented by paved walkways to foster seamless movement.
Architectural Elements and Shadowplay
Modular Design: Inspired by traditional cross vaults, the shading elements reinterpret this iconic structure into perforated forms that merge nature with the built environment.
Facade and Appearance: The architecture bridges historical motifs with modern design, featuring Arabian-inspired patterns that blend with the natural surroundings.
Shadowplay: Experimenting with light and shadows, we designed a perforation system that brings an ethereal quality to the space, allowing sunlight to filter gently through the canopy.
By prioritizing sustainable architecture and cultural restoration, the Oasis of Culture project sets a benchmark for urban regeneration. Through innovative design and ecological integration, it aims to rebuild Aleppo as a city of hope and resilience, reflecting its historical significance and future aspirations.
