Clavel Arquitectos Wraps a Murcia Leisure Complex in a Cage of Bronze Fins and Concrete Towers
Odiseo fuses rooftop pools, subterranean parking theatrics, and layered dining into a single vertical entertainment hub outside Murcia, Spain.
Most leisure complexes settle for being large. Odiseo, designed by Clavel Arquitectos on the outskirts of Murcia, settles for being theatrical. The building stacks gastronomy, nightlife, wellness, and spectacle into a compact vertical sequence, then sheathes the whole thing in a curtain of bronze-toned battens that glow at dusk like a lantern dropped into suburban sprawl. It is, by any reasonable measure, excessive. But it is also precisely calibrated, and that tension between exuberance and control is what makes the project worth studying.
What Clavel Arquitectos have built is less a building than an itinerary. Visitors move from a parking garage that doubles as an installation piece, through lobbies of radial lighting and metallic textures, up to dining rooms encased in brass domes, and finally onto a rooftop terrace with a pool, gilded giraffe sculptures, and panoramic views over the Murcian plain. Each transition resets the atmosphere. The architecture is not background; it is the main event, and every surface, from board-formed concrete to perforated metal, has been orchestrated to participate in that event.
A Facade That Performs

The primary facade is a dense screen of vertical fins, bronze in tone, spaced closely enough to filter views while remaining permeable to air and light. At night the screen becomes the building's billboard: backlit signage and circular illuminated patterns turn the elevation into a graphic surface. The effect is closer to stage design than conventional cladding, and that is clearly intentional. Clavel Arquitectos treat the street elevation not as a container wall but as a threshold between the mundane parking lot and the curated experience inside.
The cylindrical volume at one end, wrapped in its own rhythm of vertical louvres and topped with rooftop lettering, reads as a companion tower. It gives the composition a landmark quality, something recognizable from the highway, while its curved geometry softens what could otherwise be an aggressive rectangular mass.
The Concrete Tower and Its Skylight

A board-formed concrete tower punctuates the composition with a rawness that contrasts sharply with the polished bronze elsewhere. Looking straight up through its shaft, you see a circular skylight ringed by radiating metal tubes, a detail that reads like a secular oculus. The worm's-eye perspective reveals the tube geometry fanning outward while foliage creeps in at the base, grounding what could be a purely abstract gesture.
This tower works as a spatial hinge. It is heavy where the screen walls are light, opaque where the louvres are transparent. The decision to leave the formwork imprints visible gives the concrete a tactile grain that rewards close inspection, a small act of honesty in a project that otherwise revels in artifice.
Underground Theater

It takes a particular kind of ambition to treat a parking garage as a design opportunity. Odiseo's underground level uses perforated metal walls backlit in orange, yellow linear ceiling lights, and bold typographic graphics with chevron arrows to turn a utilitarian space into an immersive corridor. The lighting is cinematic: warm pools of color dissolve the concrete slab ceiling into something approaching atmosphere.
The logic here is sequential. The leisure experience does not begin at the front door; it begins the moment you pull off the road. By the time you reach the lobby, your expectations have already been recalibrated. This is a smart move for a destination that depends on word-of-mouth spectacle.
Lobbies and Corridors as Atmosphere Machines

The entrance lobby deploys radial ceiling lighting strips, textured metallic wall panels, and sculptural objects flanked by glowing circular forms to create a space that feels like entering a luxury spacecraft. It is maximalist without apology. Green-floored corridors with backlit curved mirrors and planters continue the surreal register, while illuminated basin alcoves with circular mirrors and potted foliage provide quieter pauses in the sequence.
Every corridor acts as a decompression chamber between programmatic zones. The palette shifts from metallics to greens to warm coppers, signaling changes in mood before you reach the next room. The approach is closer to hospitality interior design than to conventional architectural planning, and that blurring of disciplines is one of the project's strengths.
Dining as Scenography

The restaurant interiors are where Clavel Arquitectos push furthest into theatrical territory. Vertical timber slat walls enclose curved banquettes beneath fan-shaped ceiling pendants that cast warm, diffused light. Copper pendant fixtures hover above ribbed booth seating, while circular display niches punch through the wall surface like portholes. The effect is simultaneously intimate and cinematic.
The private dining booths enclosed by brass dome frameworks go a step further. Integrated lighting and suspended glass pendants create a micro-environment for each table, an architecture within the architecture. The risk of preciousness is real, but the robust materiality of the brass framework keeps things grounded. You are inside a cage, yes, but a gilded one.
Rooftop, Pool, and Landscape

The rooftop resolves the vertical journey with open sky, water, and vegetation. An aerial view reveals the pool tucked beneath a metal pergola structure that casts geometric shadows across the deck, establishing a rhythm that echoes the facade battens below. The lap pool on a lower terrace is framed by vertical timber screens, offering swimmers a filtered panorama of the surrounding landscape.
At the poolside dining terrace, curved glass walls and set tables sit under the same timber screen system, collapsing the boundary between outdoor recreation and gastronomy. This layering of program, food alongside water alongside view, is the project's most convincing spatial argument. It demonstrates that the spectacle downstairs is not just decorative excess but part of a coherent strategy for stacking public life vertically.
The Courtyard and Rooftop Follies

The courtyard terrace, visible from above, organizes round seating clusters among vertical timber columns that cast long afternoon shadows. The elevated view of the complex reveals how the curved roof and landscaped podium mediate between the building's assertive presence and its flat suburban context. At dusk, illuminated giraffe sculptures and golden foliage on the rooftop terrace push the project into a register that is frankly surreal, an ornamental gesture that would be absurd elsewhere but feels consistent with Odiseo's commitment to total atmosphere.
Plans and Drawings

The site plan reveals two volumes positioned diagonally within the parcel, their offset alignment creating outdoor spaces at every edge. Floor plans show curved circulation paths weaving through planted areas, confirming that the fluid spatial experience above is not accidental but geometrically orchestrated. The section drawing is particularly revealing: planted terraces step up the facade behind the screen of vertical battens, with palm trees visible at the rooftop level, demonstrating how landscape occupies every horizontal surface.
The exploded axonometric breaks the project into three stacked layers: a woven roof canopy, a water collection system at the pool terrace level, and a planted terrace plane. This diagram makes explicit what the photographs only suggest: that the building's environmental strategy and its scenographic ambitions are not separate agendas but the same system expressed at different scales.
Why This Project Matters
Odiseo is easy to dismiss as pure spectacle, and there is no shortage of gold and glow to fuel that reading. But what Clavel Arquitectos have actually built is a rigorous experiment in vertical leisure programming. The project compresses parking, dining, nightlife, wellness, and rooftop landscape into a single compact footprint on a suburban site where horizontal sprawl would have been the path of least resistance. The facade, for all its theatrical lighting, is a genuine climatic filter. The planted terraces are not garnish; they are the building's section strategy. The result is a project where the sensory excess and the architectural intelligence are inseparable.
For architects working on hospitality and entertainment programs, the lesson here is not about bronze fins or giraffe sculptures. It is about commitment. Odiseo works because every space, from the parking garage to the private dining pod to the rooftop pool, operates at the same pitch of intensity. There are no dead zones, no moments where the architecture relaxes into generic neutrality. That consistency is harder to achieve than any single spectacular gesture, and it is what elevates the project from themed environment to genuine architecture.
