One-and-a-half-floor House by studio SAAM: A Seamless Blend of Innovation and Elegance
Innovative Amsterdam loft by studio SAAM adds mezzanine, maximizing space while preserving openness. Elegant materials and seamless design enhance functionality.
The One-and-a-half-floor House by studio SAAM is a brilliant example of innovative design and space optimization. Located in North Amsterdam, The Netherlands, this project reimagines a traditional loft with a ceiling height of 4.5 meters by adding a mezzanine floor, creating additional living space while maintaining the original loft’s openness.

The Challenge: Expanding Space Without Compromising Height
The client wanted to increase the living space in the loft but was constrained by the ceiling height, which wasn’t high enough for a complete extra floor. The design challenge was to create additional space without compromising the spacious, open feel of the original loft.

Structural Innovation: Minimalist Mezzanine Design
The solution emerged from a clever structural approach. Since placing columns or hanging the mezzanine from the ceiling was impossible due to limited reinforcement in the concrete floor and ceiling, the architects utilized diagonal steel traction cables. These cables connect the steel construction of the mezzanine with the existing structure at a precise angle, allowing the floor to be suspended securely.
The mezzanine is crafted from hollow wooden profiles placed between slim steel L-profiles, making the structure lightweight yet strong. This innovative approach allowed for a minimal floor height of just 12 cm, ensuring that both the space below and above the mezzanine remain functional and comfortable.

Material Selection: Preserving Natural Qualities
The materials used were chosen carefully to retain their original characteristics and contribute to the overall aesthetic. The goal was to incorporate materials that would showcase their natural textures and finishes.
• Wooden Profiles: Used for the mezzanine floor to maintain structural strength while keeping the material lightweight.
• Marble Countertops: The kitchen features untreated marble crafted by studio SOOL, adding a touch of elegance and maintaining the raw beauty of the material.
By minimizing the variety of materials used, the design maintains visual cohesion and highlights the inherent qualities of each material.

Spatial Experience: Retaining the Loft’s Openness
Preserving the original sense of spaciousness and height was a priority. Adding a mezzanine presented the challenge of maintaining the open feel while introducing a new level. This was achieved through careful voids and visual connectionsbetween spaces, ensuring that the different areas remained interconnected.
The absence of partitions and the use of open sightlines ensure that the feeling of openness persists throughout the loft. The new mezzanine blends seamlessly into the existing space, enhancing the experience of the large, open areas while adding functional living zones.

Design Philosophy: Seamless Integration
Studio SAAM’s design approach focused on achieving a balance between functionality and aesthetics. By combining structural innovation with carefully curated materials and maintaining spatial continuity, they created a living space that feels both expansive and intimate.
A Collaborative Masterpiece

The One-and-a-half-floor House is the result of successful collaboration between all parties involved. It exemplifies a design process that blends creative problem-solving with high-quality craftsmanship, transforming a simple loft into an extraordinary, multi-functional living space.
This project stands as a testament to how limitations can inspire innovative solutions, creating homes that are not just structures but experiences.
