Path to Self-Reliance

Existing refugee camps operate within limited resources and space, and refugees are forced to passively adapt to the given environment. This often leads to psychological distress and makes self-sufficiency difficult. To address this, we propose providing modular housing spaces using prefabricated 3D printing technology, allowing refugees to assemble and modify their own homes. This approach enables refugees to not only have a place to live but also to cultivate and transform their spaces, laying the foundation for self-reliance.

This new paradigm of refugee camps has several key characteristics:

  1. Autonomous Space DesignThis system allows for flexible adjustment of both private and communal spaces. Refugees can freely organize their designated autonomous spaces in various ways, such as linking them with living areas, religious facilities, or commercial spaces. This flexibility enables refugees to continue their lives within the camp while maintaining a sense of autonomy.
  2. 3D Printing Modular HousingThe use of prefabricated 3D printing modular housing allows refugees to modify their living spaces according to individual needs. This design enables the transformation of housing based on personal requirements, ensuring greater adaptability.
  3. Emphasis on Pathways and Connection with Central Self-Reliance Support SystemsThe layout places autonomous spaces facing each other, with pathways emphasized between them. These pathways will be distinctive, each with its own theme, and will serve as unique, characteristic routes. Additionally, central facilities that support refugees' self-reliance will be strategically placed, ensuring a connection between the living areas and support services.
  4. Eco-Friendly Architecture SystemAn eco-friendly camp design has been introduced, utilizing rainwater harvesting systems and solar panels for energy self-sufficiency. The camp will be built with sustainable materials, including 3D printing components made from recycled plastics and metal waste, ensuring environmental friendliness.

Our project presents a new paradigm for refugee camps, transforming them from simple shelters into spaces where refugees can build autonomous lives. By allowing refugees to design and personalize their own spaces, it is expected to enhance their psychological well-being. The integration of 3D printing technology with prefabricated modular housing offers a swift solution to housing challenges, providing a sustainable living environment. Additionally, by creating opportunities for small-scale economic activities within these spaces, it is anticipated to foster economic self-reliance and increase the potential for refugees to design an independent future.

The focus of this project is not just on providing shelter, but on offering refugees the opportunity to cultivate their own space and achieve self-reliance. The innovative approach combining 3D printing technology and prefabricated modules goes beyond the traditional concept of refugee camps, presenting a sustainable and human-centered solution. Through this, the ultimate goal is to help refugees design an independent future for themselves.
