Peace Chapel is a sensitive example of sustainable architecture that brings together sacred space, local culture, ecological thinking, and community life. Designed as more than a chapel, the project creates a calm urban sanctuary where people can gather, pray, reflect, and spend time within a carefully preserved green environment. Its central idea is simple yet powerful: architecture can protect nature, respect local identity, and support social connection at the same time.
Located within a large green park, the chapel is conceived as a community-oriented architectural intervention. The proposal preserves the existing greenery and enriches it with new trees, plants, and natural garden spaces. Instead of treating the building as an isolated object, the design places it within a broader landscape system. The result is a peaceful public environment where architecture and nature operate as one continuous experience.
The project responds to the cultural and religious context of Ethiopia through its form, materiality, ornamentation, and spatial organization. Inspired by traditional Ethiopian churches, the chapel uses a central plan with a clearly defined sacred core. Around this inner chapel, a protective outer wall wraps the building, forming a calm threshold between the city, the park, and the spiritual interior.


Sustainable Architecture as a Community Framework
Peace Chapel is not only a religious building. It is also a social space designed for residents, visitors, and local communities. The project introduces a flexible programme that includes a prayer hall, gathering space, eatery, kitchen, priest room, and storage area. Outside the chapel, the landscape is planned as a place for activities, informal meetings, and public interaction.
This combination of sacred and civic functions gives the project a broader social purpose. The chapel becomes a place where people from different backgrounds can come together, regardless of their religion. It supports community integration through architecture by offering a shared environment rooted in peace, openness, and cultural respect.
The plan reflects this inclusive approach. A central chapel space is placed at the heart of the composition, while the surrounding areas support everyday community functions. The circular and curved geometry creates a sense of enclosure without making the building feel defensive. Instead, it produces a protective, contemplative atmosphere that feels connected to the surrounding landscape.
A Form Inspired by Protection and Spiritual Presence
The form of Peace Chapel is inspired by folded hands protecting an important object. This symbolic gesture becomes the architectural concept for the building. The outer walls wrap around the inner chapel, shielding the sacred space while also creating a gradual movement from the public landscape into the spiritual center.
The building appears as a calm, earth-toned volume within the park. Its rounded form softens the architectural presence and allows the structure to sit gently among trees and vegetation. The chapel does not attempt to dominate the site. Instead, it becomes part of the natural garden, using its low horizontal profile and organic geometry to harmonize with the landscape.
The central plan reinforces the sacred character of the project. Traditional Ethiopian churches often use clearly defined centers, symbolic spatial sequences, and protective enclosures. Peace Chapel translates these principles into a contemporary architectural language while maintaining a strong connection to cultural memory.
Ethiopian Architectural Traditions Reinterpreted
One of the strongest aspects of the project is its use of architectural details inspired by Ethiopian tradition and culture. The openwork facade ornaments refer to symbolic and constructional elements found in historical Ethiopian architecture. These references are simplified, geometrized, and adapted into a contemporary facade system.
The facade includes different perforation patterns inspired by the Axum Kingdom symbol, traditional construction techniques, and the historic method known as “monkey heads.” These details are not used as surface decoration only. They perform environmental and spatial functions, creating ventilation, filtering sunlight, and producing rich shadow patterns inside the building.
This approach gives the chapel a layered identity. From the outside, the perforated walls create rhythm and texture across the curved surface. From the inside, sunlight passes through the openings and fills the chapel with shifting patterns of light. The spiritual atmosphere is therefore shaped not by excessive ornament, but by the controlled interaction between material, light, air, and space.
Local Materials and Low-Tech Ecological Design
Peace Chapel uses local materials and low-tech construction principles as part of its sustainable architecture strategy. The structure is made from a mixture of earth and cement, pressed under pressure and reinforced. This gives the building a natural, grounded character while reducing dependence on complex imported systems.
The material palette is intentionally restrained. Earth-toned surfaces, thick walls, and simple geometric forms give the chapel a timeless quality. The building feels connected to the soil, the climate, and the local construction context. Rather than relying on visual complexity, the project finds strength in simplicity, proportion, and environmental performance.
Low-tech ecological architecture is central to the concept. The building integrates natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting, a double facade, and passive environmental control. These systems help reduce energy demand while supporting comfort inside the chapel and gathering areas.
Climate Responsive Landscape Design
The landscape is treated as an essential part of the architectural proposal. Peace Chapel preserves the existing green areas and adds new trees and plants to strengthen the natural character of the park. The goal is to create a garden that can develop freely, rather than a rigidly controlled landscape.
This strategy supports climate responsive design in several ways. Trees provide shade, reduce heat, improve the microclimate, and create a calm public setting around the chapel. Vegetation helps the building merge with its surroundings and creates a buffer between the urban context and the sacred space.
The site plan shows the chapel positioned within a wider green system, with pathways and activity areas arranged around it. The building becomes the spiritual and social center of the park, while the landscape forms a natural framework for movement, gathering, and reflection.


Light, Ventilation, and Interior Atmosphere
The perforated double facade is one of the project’s most important environmental and experiential features. Openings in the walls allow air to move through the building naturally, supporting passive ventilation. At the same time, sunlight enters through the patterned facade and creates a dynamic interior atmosphere.
Inside the curved walls, light becomes an architectural material. It falls across the floor, walls, and inner surfaces in soft, geometric patterns. This creates a peaceful spiritual environment without relying on heavy symbolism. The chapel’s sacred quality emerges through space, light, silence, and material presence.
The filtered light also reduces direct solar exposure, helping the interior remain more comfortable. This balance between beauty and performance is a key strength of the design. The ornament is not separate from sustainability. It is part of the climate strategy, cultural identity, and emotional experience of the building.

Instead, it draws from Ethiopian traditions, local materials, traditional forms, and regional construction references. This makes the chapel both environmentally responsible and contextually meaningful.
By protecting existing greenery, using local materials, introducing passive systems, and creating public landscape space, Peace Chapel offers a model for architecture that is socially and environmentally aware.
