Playducation: Modular Architecture That Turns Play Into a Space for Learning

Playducation, a project by Anoushka Puri, explores this relationship through a system of modular architecture designed for children living within refugee settlements.

Shortlisted in Re-imagining Play 2020, the project proposes an adaptable play environment where education is not separated from recreation. Instead, learning becomes embedded within climbing, building, touching, experimenting, moving, and interacting.

The idea behind the project is expressed through its name: Playducation.

Rather than designing an environment where children simply learn through play, the proposal encourages them to learn with play. Every structural element becomes a potential educational tool, while the architecture itself becomes something children can occupy, explore, manipulate, and reinterpret.

Architecture as an Environment for Childhood Development

The built environment constantly affects human behavior and wellbeing. For children, that influence can be even stronger because spaces become part of the process through which they discover independence, social relationships, physical ability, and imagination.

Playducation responds to this relationship by treating modular architecture as an active learning environment rather than a static object.

Within the module, children can climb, balance, build, sit, observe, touch, gather, and experiment. These activities allow physical development and cognitive exploration to occur simultaneously.

The architecture is therefore not intended simply to contain play. It becomes part of the play itself.

For children experiencing displacement and uncertainty, the proposal also seeks to create an inviting environment within an otherwise unstable context. Instead of defining the module through rigid educational functions, Playducation provides multiple possibilities for activity and interpretation.

Children can play with it, play on it, and play inside it.

A Geometric Framework for Flexible Play

One of the most distinctive aspects of Playducation is its geometric structural language.

The design studies polyhedral geometries including the dodecahedron, icosahedron, and icosidodecahedron before developing an exoskeleton capable of accommodating multiple activities.

The resulting form gives the module a strong visual identity while creating numerous surfaces, openings, edges, and internal volumes that can support different forms of play.

This geometric approach also supports the central idea of modularity.

Individual modules can operate independently or be positioned together in clusters. Depending on site conditions, they can sit beside one another or form more complex arrangements.

The proposal demonstrates how modular architecture can adapt without demanding a single fixed configuration.

This becomes particularly important within refugee settlements, where available space, terrain, density, climate, and patterns of occupation may differ considerably from one location to another.

Designing Around the Existing Refugee Settlement

The site strategy shown in the proposal avoids turning the playground into an isolated architectural object.

Instead, modules are positioned around an existing open ground within the refugee settlement.

This preserves a central area for activities such as running, football, group games, or informal gatherings while smaller clusters create more intimate pockets around its perimeter.

A child might participate in an energetic group activity within the open ground, explore a module with friends, or occupy one of the smaller niches independently.

The module can effectively unfold before deployment where site conditions permit. Various components expand outward from the central structure, allowing the compact geometric object to develop a larger relationship with the surrounding ground.

This flexibility increases the range of possible uses without requiring completely different structures for every activity.

A single module can therefore support changing configurations over time.

This is an important principle within modular architecture, where adaptability allows limited structural components to generate many spatial possibilities.

Instead of prescribing exactly how every child should use the structure, Playducation provides a framework that supports interpretation.

Inside the Playducation Module

The exploded architectural diagram reveals how several layers of activity are integrated within the structural frame.

The module incorporates bars and grips for climbing and movement, poles and hoops for physical activity, and blocks and tactile toys that encourage experimentation and hands-on interaction.

It also contains niches and nets, creating smaller spaces where children can occupy different levels of the structure, while climbing components expand opportunities for physical exploration.

These elements are organized within the external exoskeleton instead of functioning as unrelated playground equipment.

As a result, structure and activity become interconnected.

The frame supports the architecture physically, but it also becomes a system from which numerous play experiences can emerge.

Combining Education and Play

Playducation challenges the assumption that education must take place within a conventional classroom.

The proposal interprets education more broadly as the development of cognitive tools children can use to understand problems, environments, relationships, and themselves.

Play provides a powerful setting for this process.

Children can create paths, assemble forms, test ideas, encounter mistakes, modify their approach, and attempt the same task in different ways.

The project draws particular attention to construction-based play similar to the logic of building blocks. Instead of being given only predetermined activities, children can investigate relationships between objects, movement, structure, and space.

Learning therefore becomes exploratory rather than purely instructional.

The objective is not simply to place educational objects inside a playground. It is to create an architectural system where the distinction between playing and learning becomes less rigid.

Instead of imposing one universal model of childhood activity, the project creates conditions in which several forms of engagement can coexist.

Designing for Different Age Groups

Playducation also considers how requirements change as children grow.

The intended users were studied across three broad age groups: children up to three years old, children between four and eight, and children aged nine and above.

These groups differ in scale, strength, coordination, cognitive ability, and preferred types of interaction.

The project responds through varying grips, module dimensions, colors, tactile components, movement opportunities, and functional elements.

Importantly, the design avoids reducing play to pure functionality.

Its purpose remains joyful and exploratory.

The architecture provides a framework within which children can discover what the space means to them rather than simply following one predetermined sequence.

Play as a Space for Recovery and Growth

Within the context of displacement, the emotional dimensions of the project become significant.

Playducation recognizes that children living in refugee settlements may have experienced profound disruption. Architecture cannot erase those experiences, but it can contribute to environments that allow children to continue playing, learning, interacting, and growing.

The project therefore aims to create a space that feels welcoming rather than institutional.

Its colorful components, unusual geometry, different levels, tactile elements, climbing surfaces, and enclosed niches produce an environment centered on curiosity.

Play becomes both an everyday activity and a way of reconnecting children with exploration and social interaction.

Modular Architecture for Uncertain Conditions

Designing for refugee settlements introduces practical constraints.

Architectural interventions may need to respond to different climates, irregular terrain, limited infrastructure, security concerns, and unpredictable patterns of occupation.

The compact modular strategy also allows the intervention to be repeated, clustered, repositioned, or adapted according to the available site.

Where larger development may be impractical, modular systems can provide a more flexible architectural response.

From Playground Equipment to Architectural System

What distinguishes Playducation is the shift from designing isolated pieces of playground equipment toward designing an interconnected spatial system.

Structure, play, movement, education, social activity, and adaptability are treated as parts of the same architectural idea.

The geometric shell provides stability. Interior components encourage physical and tactile interaction. Niches introduce smaller spatial experiences. Expandable elements connect the module with surrounding open ground.

Together, these elements transform a relatively compact structure into a multidimensional playground.

This is where modular architecture becomes more than a construction strategy. Modularity becomes a method of producing choice.

Children can engage with the environment differently. Communities can arrange the modules according to local circumstances. Activities can change without requiring the entire architectural system to be redesigned.
