Private Residence Renovation in Goto Islands by Souta Yoriki Design Office
A serene coastal residence blending natural materials, long sea-facing windows, and simple modern spaces to connect guests and residents with the Goto Islands’ landscape.
Located on Fukue Island in the serene Goto Islands of Nagasaki Prefecture, this private residence renovation by Souta Yoriki Design Office seamlessly blends contemporary design with the natural beauty of the surrounding seascape. Completed in 2024, the project transforms an old private home into a functional guest house and private residence, embracing the island’s coastal charm while prioritizing comfort and modern aesthetics.

Spanning 119 m², the design strategically positions windows in every room to frame the breathtaking views of the Abunze Coast. The living room features a dynamic, elongated window that captures the horizon, allowing residents and guests to experience the natural landscape from sunrise to sunset. The architectural approach emphasizes openness, inviting the outdoors inside and creating a strong visual connection with the surrounding environment.

The interior design focuses on simplicity and warmth. By using natural materials such as wood and stone, the architects maintained a minimal yet cozy atmosphere that complements the island’s organic beauty. The spatial layout is intentionally straightforward, balancing functional living with aesthetic appeal.

The floor plan is designed for versatility, accommodating both private residence living and guest house functionality. A central living room acts as a communal hub, promoting interaction between residents and visitors. Rooms are connected in a continuous flow, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. This fluid design encourages occupants to immerse themselves fully in the island’s rich natural environment.

From the kitchen with custom countertops to bedrooms that open up to the coastal scenery, every detail was thoughtfully crafted to harmonize with the landscape. The renovation respects the original structure while reimagining it as a modern, inviting space that celebrates the Goto Islands’ serene beauty.
This project exemplifies how contemporary Japanese architecture can honor traditional contexts, embrace sustainability through natural materials, and foster meaningful human experiences.
