Protest for Rememberance
PROTEST AGAINST BALDIA TOWN FACTORY
CAUSE OF PROTEST:
This is a case study of ‘the most terrifying event’ of Baldia Town Factory Karachi-Pakistan, an unfortunate garments facility and exporters that suffered from devastating fire accident on 9/11 of
2012. The approximate death counts reached till 258 lives of factory workers and hundreds of people got injured. Where research says; The owners belonged to Bhaila Memons community –found a very successful business community, plays around billions of rupees investment in import and exports as well. The data is collected some of resources from pertinent literature, media content, chronicle analysis and Delphi technique where they conducted eight interviews from some well known industry experts. On other hand some printed media reports through renowned newspapers and casted news on TV and online social media accused the owners for such tragic event.
Later on, the government investigation teams revealed some shocking facts regarding it and claimed that some renowned Karachi-based political party is responsible behind this incident as well, Since the owners of the factory refused to disburse the extortion money.
Majorly the Domestic stakeholders, policy makers and international organizations intervened to compensate the victims but, sadly the law courts could not exercise justice.
The Baldia Town Factory Fire — as it came to be known — was one of the deadliest incidents in the history of Pakistan — the 9/11 of the country. Over 260 ill-fated people lost their lives in the garments factory named Ali Enterprises, 16 of whom were charred beyond recognition. In September this year, finally after eight years, the anti-terrorism court announced its verdict (ANTI-TERRORISM COURT, 2017). Two key culprits were sentenced to death and four handed life imprisonment. According to the joint investigation team’s report, the factory was set on fire deliberately by the facilitators of a political party when the owners refused to pay extortion money. The judgement, though delayed and delivered after many twists and turns, left many questions unanswered. Why were the factory doors closed? Why were so many people who died at young age when their relatives claimed they were working there for years? Why the owners did not informed the security agencies about the threats? Why the workers and factory itself were not registered with the relevant departments? The judgement did not shed light on these and many other questions that have left a gaping hole in the minds of the victims who survived and the families of those who perished.
This project will focus on the questions mentioned above and also seek the answers. It will also focus on the labor laws and the implementation of these laws in Pakistan. More importantly, it will probe reasons for the deliberate negligence of the concerned authorities and departments and hopefully shed light on the systemic injustice, incompetence and apathy that led to the incident and its aftermath.
CONCEPT:
Due to concerned scenarios my idea proceed towards protest against the owner and all the members found associated in this incident including authorities and to spread awareness among the effected families as well as the labours who were still working on these kind of factories. Purpose of selecting the topic on Rememberance. the people or familes affected in this incident they are still kot able to forget that terrifying scenario and whenever they pass through and see that abandoned haunted building they remind a glimpse of what happened and their eyes swallows for a while. This is such structure that lies on a major node and road that leads to balochistan. Not just people those people gets sorrowed whose families were associated with the incident gets upset when they see it but the entire town who suffered that moment where almost one out of 3 every door step was sending there loved ones to the another world called " REAL WORLD".
WHY REMEMBERANCE:
IMPACT
The perspectives pushed myself to take it in consideration and make this building as a monumental piece by keeping the factor of remembrance where the locals will find there loved ones in between them as the building is stands very bold.
Secondly from inside building will house different awareness program for the betterment where that will work on labour learnings related to safety and security sessions. These activities will help new workers with the incorporation of SITE Management. This will also make them aware regarding what are their rights they have to go for, A learning module with all working etiquettes in factory.
Allied facilities such as cafes which will be run by the effected families so that can be helpful for them in their finances. Whatever the income will get generated from the Cafe will be divided to the widows and disables. Cafe will be housed on mezzanine area, to get the view of arts and craft activities from there as well.
DESIGN STRATIGIES:
1-staircase (external internal)
INTERNAL : These staircase made up of glass and have some crack effect on it to reflect the destroyed staircase on that time people have to face struggle or fear when they move up. so i portray the same idea.
External: These staircase highlighted by the Red color which will indicate the missing elements, these stairs will be connected with scaffolding, where visitors will have to find the way to enter the door that will be a part of experience to remeberaise them the struggle to find the escape.
2-Pathway: Pathway is important element so i want people can experice it, holographic projections from the ceiling on sewing machine tables to make it vibrant because those machines were also found a barrier while escaping from the situation that took place. The irregular placements of furniture layout will be create a scene of journey for the people that will pass through from it . Workers they will come for learning session they will be thaught by experimenting it from the examples of what is right and what is wrong?
3-windows: these windows are design for a purpose to reflect the old windows which have small grills bar on it and people cant jump from them they only watch outside and feel the life outside these windows what a terrifying moment! so i design a window which have aluminium sheet and glass panel on it to have small holes in it and between glass and aluminum there is a smomme machine so when sun rays hit the glass rays want to go through these holes when the rays will enter the space that will create a smoke or light effect which portray the life .
4-Door : there is a door at first floor in existing building which opens at facade which is useless so i highlighted that door by making a narrow path which have no exis, made up of glass to highlight the transparancy but users have to go back.
5- scaffolding: these scaffolidng portray the idea of something which is destroyed or rebuilt also the sense of levels, openness, boundary, and kind of maze that will grab the attention of the viewers.
SECOND FLOOR:
Social Rights Consultancy: in this floor there is awareness program is set up, during the investigation time period. A mother whose only child left this word in this incident. Her name is SAEEDA KHATOON for justice she took a step and running organization with the help or foreign consultant ,there is a short movie(Discount Worker) is based on the Baldia town and Saeeda Khatoon is a leading character of it. It is made for human social rights film festival the Director want to do a protest in a form of film. and he want to show that movie on existing site but due to pandamic issues it was delayed. so the idea is to design 2nd floor accordingly.
