PYR House by Cazú Zegers: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Landscape
PYR House by Cazú Zegers is a stunning, nature-integrated residence in Chile, inspired by pyrite and designed with sustainable materials.
Located in the picturesque setting of Panguipulli, Chile, PYR House is an architectural masterpiece designed by Cazú Zegers. This stunning residential project seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings while overcoming unique site challenges. The 2024-square-meter house is a perfect example of contemporary architecture that respects and enhances the environment.

Site and Architectural Concept
The PYR House is situated on a dramatic site where the sun rises from behind the main lakefront view and a steep 40-foot (12-meter) cliff defines the terrain. These conditions became the foundation of the architectural concept, influencing the orientation, form, and material selection of the house.
The design is also inspired by pyrite, often called the "stone of home" or "fire stone". This mineral serves as both a poetic and structural reference, shaping the geometric language of the residence.

Design and Structure
Central Staircase and Volumetric Composition
A key architectural element of PYR House is its central staircase, which establishes a strong vertical connection from the top of the terrain to the lake level. The staircase structure mirrors the cubic geometry of pyrite, reinforcing the architectural vision.
The house unfolds as a complex three-story volume, harmonizing with the rock formations that characterize the site. The result is a sculptural residence that appears as a natural extension of the landscape.

Materiality and Construction
The construction method balances tradition with innovation. The house utilizes a hybrid structure combining metal, wood, and concrete. To mitigate moisture, concrete is exclusively used in the underground sections, while wood and metal define the lightweight upper volumes. This strategic selection of materials enhances both durability and aesthetic appeal.
The PYR House by Cazú Zegers is an exceptional example of context-responsive architecture. By blending topography, materiality, and geometric inspiration, the residence achieves a striking yet harmonious presence in Panguipulli's natural landscape. The interplay of light, structure, and natural elements makes this house a true architectural landmark, redefining modern residential design in Chile.
