RCAB Studio Borrows a Public Park as the Courtyard for a Steel and Timber House in West Jakarta
On a 407 m² corner lot in West Jakarta, exposed steel, timber and a rooftop of bougainvillea turn a neighboring park into this house's real courtyard.
The courtyard house is one of the most dependable types in tropical domestic architecture. You carve a void, let light and air drop into it, and arrange rooms around a private piece of sky. With Beyond The Courtyard House in West Jakarta, RCAB Studio, led by Martinus Andika and Ricky Cahyadi, keeps the courtyard but questions where it has to sit. The 407 m² corner lot faces a mature public park full of large tropical trees, and the architects treat that park as the house's true courtyard, a shared landscape that the 991 m² residence borrows visually and experientially.
That is the interesting move, and it carries some risk. Turning outward on a dense Jakarta block means giving up some of the enclosure that makes the courtyard type comfortable. The brief asked for generous daylight, cross ventilation and a close connection to nature. The material palette makes a personal statement as well: the owner works in the steel industry, so the steel is left exposed as part of the house's identity, with timber used to keep it from feeling industrial. The result is a stacked, screened and heavily planted house that holds its private life close while orienting itself toward the trees across the street.
