FAQ Design Process
- What was the concept behind the project?
At first, the idea that the residential spaces should be modular and movable and the rest of the spaces should be fixed and durable caused the residential and service areas to be marked independently on the site.
Due to the location of the school in the southern neighborhood of the site, the residential area of the homeless people was placed in the north of the site in order not to cause noise disturbance.
For the residential part, according to the concept of portability and cost reduction and environmental sustainability, used container modules were used.
- What has been thought of for homeless people with disabilities?
The presence of two units with disabled standards for the residence of disabled people and the placement of basic uses on the ground floor, as well as the presence of a riding path near the disabled units, is considered for the convenience of these people.
- Why we use container for modular part?
Containers are metal boxes that are used to transport goods by sea, land or air. They can also be converted into housing units for homeless people, which has some advantages over traditional housing. Some of the benefits of using containers for homeless housing are:
- They are cost-effective: Containers are relatively cheap to buy, transport and modify. They can also be stacked on top of each other to save space and create multi-story buildings
- They are environmentally friendly; Containers are made of steel, which is a recyclable material. By reusing containers, less waste is generated and less energy is consumed. Containers can also be fitted with solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems and other green features
- They are fast and easy to set up: Containers are prefabricated and modular, which means they can be quickly assembled and disassembled. They can also be moved to different locations and reused very easily. This allows governments and organizations to quickly deploy safe and affordable housing in their communities while cutting the costs of such projects dramatically.
- What was the intent behind the organization of element across various levels?
Considering the hot and dry climate of Oklahoma City, the creation of shade to reduce the temperature was very important
Placing the pergola in the main movement paths has also been done to create shade and adjust the air in the environment.
In addition, reducing the occupation level was also important. So, we tried to create a second level to help adjust the air temperature and to increase the level of some uses so that less space is consumed and spatial planning is done.
- How many iterations were tried to arrive at the final outcome?
After choosing the container as the main module of the work, we started to examine the structural analysis and the potential of combining the containers together, and among several alternatives, the option that has both the combination of open and semi-open spaces and the favorable light from the north and the south reaches all the modules.
- Which methods of design investigation?
The design was done by a combination of conceptual and practical design, which has the ability to be implemented with minimal local materials, and to give importance to concepts such as attention to the context and attention to sustainability.
- How was the program condensed into final?
By selecting points related to the concept, we reached a conclusion from among the produced alternatives.
- What were the materials chosen?
An attempt has been made to use local materials in Oklahoma, where most of the houses used wood, and also to use recyclable materials such as used containers, so as to minimize damage to the nature and to fit the context of the region.
- How has the concept of sustainability been used in this project?
Materialaterial:
Using used containers Also recyclable materials such as: wood and metal.
Landscape:
Using climate-friendly plants and flooring with environmentally friendly materials.
Energy:
Placing solar cells on top of the container, which makes them self-sufficient in terms of electricity.
Use of thermal insulation in the body of containers that minimizes energy loss.
- What is the expansion plan of the project?
The western part of the site is considered for development, which should be developed according to the main axes of the western part, whose diagram is attached.
- How will the project transform with the passing time?
Due to the fact that containers are easily movable, new containers can be added when the number of users increases, and when there is a need to change the use of the residential sector, they can be collected quickly and easily.
Also, for the ease of this work, a vehicle movement path around the site has been installed so that the change operation can be carried out.
- What are the proportions used in the design of different parts?
In the residential area, the proportions of the condo module (2.4m x 6m) are used. And by relying on this module, the proportions of the rest of the spaces such as: landscape, service spaces, movement paths, etc. have been designed.
