A Modern Farmhouse Rooted in Northern California’s Rural Heritage

Set within the sun-drenched chaparral landscape between the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, the Rural Reimagined Residence by Fergus Garber Architects reinterprets Northern California’s farmhouse tradition for contemporary living. Designed for a retired Palo Alto couple seeking simplicity, connection to nature, and proximity to family, the 1,200-square-foot ADU becomes a compact yet generous retreat nestled across 13 acres of rolling farmland. Its quiet presence harmonizes with a century-old farmhouse where the owners’ eldest son resides, strengthening multigenerational bonds while preserving rural character.

Context, Landscape, and Architectural Intent

The new home sits discreetly between two hills, framed by mature heritage oak trees that naturally separate it from the original farmhouse. The architecture draws inspiration from the region’s vernacular forms—clean lines, functional materials, and a deep sensitivity to climate. By embracing sunlight, breezes, and panoramic views, the residence becomes both a haven and an extension of its natural surroundings.

A Contemporary Farmhouse Language

The exterior composition honors local architectural history while introducing refined modern touches. The house is wrapped in white tongue-and-groove siding, accented by elegant columns and covered by a standing-seam metal roof. A generous wrap-around porch defines the edge of the home, offering shade, filtered light, and seamless indoor–outdoor transitions.

Brick flooring laid in a basketweave pattern extends from the porch through the entry hall, erasing boundaries between the sheltered exterior and the warm interior. Large French doors and transom-topped sash windows on all sides allow natural cross-ventilation and golden California sunlight to pour into the living spaces.

Interior Layout: Compact, Warm, and Highly Functional

The home’s thoughtful layout divides public and private functions along a narrow, light-filled entry hall.

Public Spaces

  • A spacious great room connects with the dining area and kitchen.
  • A screened porch expands the living experience into the landscape, ideal for al fresco dining and gatherings.
  • High ceilings and natural materials create a sense of openness well beyond the home’s modest footprint.

Private Spaces

  • The primary bedroom suite includes a walk-in closet and a serene bathroom.
  • A compact yet comfortable guest suite allows family and friends to feel welcome without overwhelming the scale of the home.

Materiality and Craftsmanship

Interior finishes draw from California’s rich history of handcrafted woodwork. Douglas fir, a native species and hallmark of West Coast design, is used extensively throughout the home. Hand-hewn vertical-grain boards form:

  • Wall paneling
  • Custom cabinetry
  • Built-in shelves and storage
  • Appliance panels
  • Cloaks and closets

Subtle yet elegant details, such as a continuous picture rail and a custom light shelf in the living area, reinforce craftsmanship and unify the interior palette.

A Rural Home Designed for Modern Living

The Rural Reimagined Residence blends heritage and contemporary comfort, delivering a home that lives larger than its 1,200 square feet.
