Screen House by Kamat & Rozario Architecture – Bengaluru, India

The Screen House by Kamat & Rozario Architecture is a stunning contemporary residence located in Bengaluru, India, completed in 2023. Designed on a 40-foot wide and 75-foot deep plot, the project creatively maximizes natural light, ventilation, and indoor-outdoor connectivity, making it a harmonious home for modern family living. Spanning 4,445 ft², the residence thoughtfully balances open spaces with intimate private zones.

The architectural approach emphasizes sunlight, air, and spatial punctuation, integrating multiple gardens and internal courtyards to create visual and environmental dynamism. Entering the house through a small entry garden, residents are guided into an open living and dining space, which serves as the heart of the home. Flanked by an internal courtyard and a secondary urban garden, these green spaces connect seamlessly to the main stairwell, which culminates in a skylight crown, introducing dappled natural light and fresh air. A central balcony further enhances views and light flow into the bedrooms.

The building’s massing gradually steps up from the roadside, ensuring privacy while maintaining a visual dialogue with the surrounding urban context. The daughter’s bedroom opens onto a large terrace overlooking the street, and other bedrooms frame the entry garden. A wooden operable screen acts as a playful alternative to curtains, reinforcing the home’s interactive design language.

Personalization and cultural reference are subtly embedded in the design. The triangular motifs integrated throughout the house pay homage to the traditional Punjabi folk embroidery – phulkari, honoring the heritage of the homeowner. High-quality materials from Grass America, Greenply, Hybec, Jaquar, Kajaria, Merinolam, and others are thoughtfully applied across interiors, cabinetry, and finishes to ensure durability and elegance.

The interior spaces combine modern functionality with aesthetic warmth, including spacious bedrooms, an airy living room, and a dining area that integrates greenery and light. The house’s thoughtful orientation, courtyards, and terraces make it an ideal sustainable, family-centric home in an urban Indian context.
