In the realm of architectural furniture design, everyday objects often become testing grounds for larger ideas of structure, materiality, and human experience. The Shell Chair is conceived not merely as a seating solution, but as a spatial and tactile experiment that questions how a chair is perceived, experienced, and understood.
Traditionally, chairs with four legs have symbolized stability, strength, and resistance. While this structural logic has endured for centuries, it has also standardized the user’s expectations. The Shell Chair challenges this convention by offering a different experiential narrative: one that emphasizes perception, excitement, and comfort without sacrificing structural integrity.

Experience Before Convention
The core question driving the Shell Chair is simple yet profound: How can we create a different experience from a chair? Rather than focusing solely on ergonomics or visual novelty, the design explores how form and structure influence emotional response.
The chair’s distinctive shell-like backrest is composed of separated plywood panels that visually unfold around the user. This layered composition creates a sense of enclosure without rigidity, offering both support and openness. The experience of sitting becomes less about passive use and more about interaction: an encounter with form, material, and balance.
Material Strategy: Plywood as an Architectural Medium
Plywood plays a central role in the Shell Chair’s architectural language. Known for its strength-to-weight ratio, plywood allows the chair to remain lightweight while maintaining durability and load-bearing capacity. Its layered grain structure is left exposed, celebrating material honesty rather than concealing it behind finishes or ornamentation.
From a production standpoint, plywood also supports affordability and scalability. The use of CNC machining ensures precision in fabrication while enabling easy assembly. This balance between craftsmanship and digital fabrication aligns the chair with contemporary architectural furniture practices.
Structural Logic and Joinery
The Shell Chair relies on traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, reinforced with wood glue, to connect its various components. This choice reflects a deliberate return to time-tested joinery methods that emphasize longevity and structural clarity.
The lower structure is further stabilized through a double-bolted connection between the main bodies, fixed using a double-sided screw. This detail enhances rigidity while remaining visually discreet, allowing the form to remain clean and uninterrupted.

Form, Balance, and Visual Lightness
Despite its unconventional appearance, the Shell Chair maintains a strong sense of balance. The slender legs and angled supports distribute loads efficiently, creating a stable base without visual heaviness. The separation between seat elements and back panels introduces rhythm and negative space, reinforcing the chair’s architectural identity.
