Singanallur: Reimagining an Urban Lakefront as a Resilient Public Landscape
Reviving Nature, Reconnecting Communities, Redefining the Urban Waterfront
Project Background
Urbanization in Indian cities has led to the loss of many natural assets, with urban lakes being one of them. These lakes have lost their status as a natural asset and a place for recreation due to encroachment, pollution, lack of access and connectivity, and poor development. Singanallur Lake is one such lake in Coimbatore that has tremendous potential to be developed into a vibrant public landscape.
This project proposes to develop the Singanallur lakefront as a public space with diverse recreational opportunities for the residents of Coimbatore. It is a vision to make the lake the ecological heart of the city that offers habitat for diverse species of flora and fauna, improves the environmental quality, promotes healthy living, and offers interaction with nature.
Design Concept
The guiding principle of the proposal is to think of the lakefront as a public landscape linking the city to the lake through ecological, recreational, and public spaces. The design creates a gradient from the city to the lake by providing a mix of public space, green space, pedestrian promenades, and recreational offerings.
Instead of providing a single focal point, the proposal provides multiple centers along the length of the lakefront. The design offers a range of recreational opportunities to cater to the needs of all age groups. The development of the lakefront is organized into five distinct zones that provide a mix of recreational, ecological, and cultural offerings while linking to the city through active and passive public spaces.
Design Process
The design process started with studying the site’s existing conditions and understanding the opportunities and challenges. The study included land use, accessibility, access to open space, vegetation, water frontage, and environmental conditions. The study revealed that pedestrian movement was not prioritized and that the lakefront was fragmented and inaccessible to the public. The study also identified the need to improve the environmental quality of the lakefront and provide much-needed open space for recreation.
Based on the findings of the site survey, a series of interventions were proposed to improve the environmental quality of the lakefront while also providing much-needed public space for the residents. The design provides a continuous walkway and cycle track along the length of the lakefront to promote non-motorized transport and reduce the reliance on private cars.
The master plan also incorporates landscape elements that improve the ecological functions of the lakefront while also providing much-needed shade and seating along the walkway. The design provides accessible routes for persons with disabilities, children’s play areas, waterfront plazas, and cycle tracks. The design principles of universal design were applied to ensure that the development was inclusive of all ages and abilities.
Each of the five development zones was designed to provide a unique character while also linking the waterfront with the city. The design specifies architectural elements, furniture, lighting, and planting that define each of the zones while also providing a sense of place and belonging. The design also makes use of native vegetation, shade, and other landscape elements to create a sense of place along the waterfront.
Sustainability
The proposal is sensitive to the need to make the lakefront a sustainable development that enhances ecological functions while also providing much-needed public space for the residents. Instead of using hard engineering solutions, the design makes use of natural processes to improve the ecological functions of the lakefront.
The design incorporates native vegetation that provides habitat for local flora and fauna while also providing much-needed shade. The design also incorporates wetlands and buffer zones that help improve water quality by filtering stormwater runoff before it reaches the lake. The design promotes sustainable transportation by providing safe pedestrian and cycle paths that reduce the need for motorized transport.
The design also incorporates energy-efficient lighting, planting native vegetation that requires minimal maintenance, and using locally available materials that are durable and sustainable. These features improve the environmental quality of the lakefront while also promoting sustainability and reducing the cost of maintenance in the long run.
