Vizaro: A Framework for Scaling Sustainable Architecture from Self to City
Vanja Vicentijevic's shortlisted Bauhaus Neue entry proposes a phased design methodology that ties personal growth to ecological urbanism.
What if the path to better cities started not with a master plan but with a single person's commitment to learning? Vizaro takes that premise seriously. Rather than proposing a fixed building typology, it outlines a structured methodology that begins at the individual level, moves through community engagement, and scales toward global applicability. The result is an architectural framework in which sustainability is not an add-on but the organizing logic of every decision, from site planning to facade detailing.
Designed by Vanja Vicentijevic, Vizaro was shortlisted in the Bauhaus Neue competition. The entry channels the original Bauhaus ethos of interdisciplinary thinking into a contemporary agenda: creating long-lasting, eco-friendly urban environments that coexist with natural ecosystems rather than overwriting them.
Slatted Volumes Scattered Among Tree Canopies

The isometric drawing establishes Vizaro's spatial character immediately. Scattered rectangular buildings, each wrapped in vertical slat facades, sit loosely among circular tree canopies of varying sizes. The buildings do not dominate the landscape; they negotiate with it. The slatted skin does double duty, filtering light while signaling a material palette rooted in renewable or low-impact resources. The decision to disperse volumes rather than consolidate them into a single mass allows green corridors to weave between structures, preserving ecological continuity at the ground plane.
A Peninsula Organized Around a Central Green Spine

The site plan reveals a peninsula condition where buildings cluster along a central green spine that runs toward the water's edge. This is environmental integration made legible in plan: the spine acts as both a pedestrian corridor and a continuous landscape system, pulling vegetation and circulation into a single armature. By orienting development along this axis, the design maximizes waterfront access while keeping built footprints compact. The surrounding water body reinforces the project's ecological ambition, positioning the development as a settlement that exists within its natural context rather than against it.
Sectional Logic and Floor Plate Studies

The combined section and plan drawings dissect the buildings into their constituent parts. Floor layouts and elevation studies sit side by side, revealing how interior organization responds to the exterior slatted facade. An orange circular accent punctuates the drawing, functioning as a graphic marker that ties the analytical sheets together while hinting at a core element that recurs across scales. The level of detail here moves the project beyond diagrammatic intent into something closer to architectural resolution, suggesting that Vicentijevic has thought carefully about how spatial quality manifests room by room.
Exploded Axonometric: Three Plates and a Slatted Core

The exploded axonometric pulls a single building apart into three stacked floor plates organized around a vertical slatted core. The orange circle reappears here, now clearly identifiable as a vertical element that anchors circulation or services while doubling as a visual landmark. Separating the plates exposes the structural logic: each floor operates as an independent horizontal plane, allowing the slatted envelope to wrap the assembly without load-bearing constraints. This approach opens up possibilities for future adaptation, a critical trait in any framework that aspires to long-term relevance.
From Individual Growth to Global Outreach
Vizaro's three-phase methodology, moving from individual growth through community impact to global outreach, is ambitious in scope. The first phase emphasizes self-education and workshops, grounding architectural practice in personal development and an understanding of human needs. The second phase translates that knowledge into socially beneficial designs at the neighborhood scale. The third projects those principles outward, arguing that solutions tested locally can become universally applicable. Whether or not one accepts the claim of global scalability, the phased structure provides a clear intellectual backbone that distinguishes Vizaro from projects content to stop at the building envelope.
Why This Project Matters
Vizaro matters because it refuses to separate design from pedagogy. In a competition invoking the Bauhaus legacy, that refusal is not just appropriate but essential. The original Bauhaus insisted that making and thinking were inseparable; Vicentijevic updates that position by arguing that sustainable architecture cannot emerge from technical knowledge alone but requires a transformation in how designers understand themselves and their relationship to communities and ecosystems.
The shortlisted entry demonstrates that a methodology can be as compelling as a building when it is backed by coherent spatial propositions. The peninsula site plan, the slatted facades, and the exploded structural logic all serve the larger thesis: that architecture becomes most durable when it is conceived as a process of alignment between human ambition and natural systems. For a young designer, that is a remarkably disciplined position to hold.
