DESIGN PROCESS: MICRO LIBRARIES
With the time changing process, scenarios have led to drastic change within the medium of work culture. Apparent paradigm shift has led to new adaptations in daily lives. Stark contrast and yet direct relation between Isolation and Involvement became new normal in post pandemic.
Micro libraries as a project caters to the post pandemic new normal of getting habitual to old charms of public spaces all in one place. The project was approached with a view of creating spaces adaptive to different urban and natural fabrics. The module represents the individualistic character as one body with various experiences within the inner parts. The design intention of the micro library is focused on internal spatial quality which enhances the interaction with the structure . The evolution of design has a flexible approach towards changing time. The elements such as stairs have played vital roles in space planning as well as functionality. The vertical movement in the module creates hierarchy of spaces with different themes according to study of user profile. Play of open, semi-open and enclosed spaces features the form development of the project with step profile running along the facade in helical path. Multiple permutation and combination of steps were explored to achieve the desired module. Storage requirement is fulfilled through space management within the riser of the steps and bookshelf attached on the structural members allowing clear passage for the users. The smaller steps leading to the intermediate levels give directionality to the entrance of the structure. The outdoor quick reading section is represented as the old library booth with rustic gestures and majorly designed for the user profile with fast pace seeking for newspaper, magazine and daily updates. The first floor comprises a hammock, hence categories under both kids as well as adults. Bookshelves are placed at the periphery of the hammock to avoid accidents led from falling books. Hammock sits on the central core with double heighted space supported on the structural members. The space is enclosed yet allows visually permeability creating an attraction point for the outsiders. The second floor has semi-open formal sitting with a natural touch of planter boxes and hanging creepers. The opening is facing towards the open space that allows ventilation and a relaxing environment to encourage reading. The module rooftop is a mirror of the step pattern in the ground floor to balance out the heavy aesthetics. The open to sky space has soft-scape area, and serves as a green roof garden. The structural framework is a centralized steel stanchion supporting a vertical square core supporting the horizontal floors. The material such as glass allows the visual assessment of spaces encouraging interaction between inside and outside. This module adapts to any background ranging from urban fabric city squares and landscape public spaces to a stand alone urban installation.
