Architects: 3dor Concepts

Overview
Perched on an elevated, barren hilltop in Taliparamba, Kerala, The Slab House by 3dor Concepts is a masterful integration of minimalist architecture, sustainable design, and natural landscaping. Designed in 2023 for a family of six, this residence leverages its panoramic views, passive cooling strategies, and layered vegetation to create a home that is both serene and functional.
The client, Noushad, envisioned a sanctuary that promotes peace, growth, and connection to nature, allowing the family to retreat from the chaos of urban life. The house’s design captures this ethos through its thoughtful orientation, materiality, and spatial planning.

Design Concept
The key architectural decisions were determined in the initial site visit:
- Maximize the stunning hilltop views.
- Build a home protected from Kerala’s intense sun.
- Incorporate vegetative layers to naturally cool the interior.
These principles shaped the house’s distinctive identity, resulting in a modern, two-story home that harmoniously blends minimalism, functionality, and nature.

Architectural Features
Roof and Facade
The long, reinforced concrete roof slab (RCC) defines the house’s aesthetic. Supported by I-beams, it spans generously, creating a monumental yet minimal appearance. Large brown wooden louvered doors cover the front facade, enhancing ventilation while offering privacy. The design elegantly balances wind flow, sunlight control, and aesthetic appeal.

Layout
The house is thoughtfully organized to optimize comfort and functionality:
- Ground Floor: Open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas, flowing seamlessly into outdoor verandahs.
- Bedrooms: Located to the east to minimize heat gain.
- Kitchen & Utility Areas: Positioned to the north for natural lighting without excessive sun exposure.
- Balcony Extensions: Function as shaded porches, providing westward views while reducing heat gain.
- Double-Height Living/Dining Area: Creates visual continuity, natural ventilation, and a sense of spaciousness.

Interior Design
The interiors are a celebration of minimalism and craftsmanship:
- Custom Furniture: Thoughtfully designed, the furniture complements the architectural vocabulary without cluttering spaces.
- Floating Dining Table: Anchored to pillars, this unique feature becomes both a functional and sculptural centerpiece.
- Single-Flight Staircase: Acts as a welcoming focal point while maintaining the open-plan concept.
- Material Palette: Laterite walls with concrete finish, wooden joinery, and aluminum windows merge durability with aesthetic warmth.
The house emphasizes harmony between structure, nature, and living spaces, providing a serene environment while retaining architectural sophistication.

Landscape Integration
Layered vegetation envelopes the residence, reducing internal temperatures and connecting the house with its natural surroundings. Designed by landscape architect Abid Noori, the gardens enhance the hilltop site while promoting biodiversity and outdoor relaxation.
The Slab House exemplifies modern minimalist architecture in India, where sustainable strategies, contextual design, and scenic views converge. It is not just a home but a sanctuary, thoughtfully designed for comfort, serenity, and natural integration.
