The Urban Ensemble: A Sustainable Micro-Housing Solution for Bengaluru
Modular micro-housing designed for Bengaluru’s working class — sustainable, affordable, and built for community living.
The Urban Ensemble is a visionary modular micro-housing development aimed at addressing the intensifying housing crisis in Bengaluru, India. With urban populations soaring and the demand for well-located, budget-friendly residences skyrocketing, this project stands out as an architectural solution that combines ecological responsibility, structural efficiency, and user-centric design. Located a mere 80 meters from the scenic Halasuru Lake and within walking distance of the Halasuru Metro Station, the site is both strategic and serene. Designed by Yamini Srivastava and Ashwin Dinesh, and recognized as the winning entry in the Plugin Housing Challenge, this housing prototype redefines compact living in one of India’s most dynamic tech hubs.

Urban Context & Site
Strategically sited near key urban infrastructure, The Urban Ensemble leverages its proximity to transit, natural landscapes, and essential amenities. The site’s adjacency to Halasuru Lake provides a unique environmental asset, enhancing livability with cool breezes and visual relief in an otherwise dense urban fabric. Access via Kensington Main Road and adjacent internal roads ensures fluid mobility, while the surrounding neighborhood supports diverse lifestyle needs. The site’s urban relevance, combined with its ecological backdrop, makes it a model for context-sensitive residential planning.
Modular Micro-Housing Design
Rooted in the principles of modular micro-housing, the design incorporates prefabricated modules—each crafted for flexibility, efficiency, and adaptability. Each module can function independently or be combined to form larger living units. The primary housing types include single and double occupancy units that feature foldable beds, multi-use furniture, and convertible partitions, empowering residents to adapt their space as needed throughout the day. Organized in a staggered V-shaped layout, the buildings are oriented to maximize airflow, daylighting, and panoramic lake views. A central courtyard acts as both a microclimate moderator and a social catalyst, fostering interaction while maintaining privacy.
Key Features
- Flexibility & Modularity: Highly transformable interiors and a modular plug-in system enable quick construction, personalization, and reduced on-site waste.
- Smart Resource Management: Green roofs, solar PV panels, and efficient rainwater harvesting systems significantly reduce utility loads.
- Eco-Friendly Landscaping: Local, low-maintenance plant species preserve the ecological balance while minimizing irrigation needs.
- Passive Ventilation: A site-responsive form generates a Venturi effect, enhancing thermal comfort and reducing reliance on mechanical cooling.
- Smart Building Technologies: Integrated automation in corridors and shared spaces improves efficiency and lowers operational costs.
- Universal Design: With stilt and open parking, accessible pathways, and inclusive amenities, the development accommodates users of all abilities.

Design Modules
- Single Occupancy Units: Designed for solo dwellers or occasional guests, these compact apartments offer lake-facing bay windows, foldable Murphy beds that transform into desks, and flexible living spaces demarcated with collapsible fabric partitions.
- Double Occupancy Units: A duplex-style design that allocates recreational zones to the lower level and private quarters to the upper floor. A shared balcony and efficient core services maximize usability and communal experience.
Sustainable Infrastructure
Sustainability lies at the core of The Urban Ensemble. The use of WaterSense-labeled plumbing fixtures and energy-efficient appliances reduces consumption without compromising comfort. The modular construction follows DFMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly) guidelines, allowing for precision off-site fabrication and streamlined onsite assembly. Additional envelope strategies, including vertical timber louvers and moss walls, offer solar shading and promote biophilic design. These passive features complement the active systems in place to ensure long-term operational savings.
Community & Scalability
At its heart, The Urban Ensemble promotes community cohesion through its well-designed shared amenities—a multipurpose podium, seating courts, and pedestrian-friendly circulation routes. It not only solves immediate housing issues for the city’s young, mobile workforce but also proposes a replicable and expandable urban housing model. The adaptable layout supports future vertical expansion, allowing the project to scale with demand without compromising design integrity. This adaptability ensures that the development remains relevant and functional over time.
Through thoughtful design, environmental integration, and a forward-thinking architectural language, The Urban Ensemble sets a precedent for affordable urban living. It embraces the ethos of compact living while ensuring that residents enjoy a high quality of life, community belonging, and environmental responsibility.
