Promoting Outdoor Activity and Nature Access

Trailcenter Rytterknægten is a flagship project within Denmark’s nationwide Danish Trailcentres initiative, designed to encourage outdoor activity, connect people with nature, and promote sustainable recreation. Situated at the highest point in Bornholm, 162 meters above sea level, the pavilion is nestled in the heart of Almindingen Forest, Denmark’s third-largest forest, offering visitors a unique gateway to explore the island’s diverse terrain and rich biodiversity.

Thoughtful Design in Harmony with Nature

The 100 m² wooden pavilion is gently elevated above the forest floor, accessed via a sloped ramp, creating minimal impact on the natural environment. Its design integrates modular layouts and multifunctional zones, including:

  • Outdoor kitchen and living area with fireplace
  • Bike repair station
  • Equipment storage
  • Information point

The structure supports both casual visitors and organized groups, emphasizing movement, rest, and social interaction while maintaining an inclusive approach to all users.

Sustainable Materials and Construction

Sustainability has guided every aspect of the project. Materials are locally sourced, including timber from nearby sawmills, and reclaimed wood from the historic Rytterknægten Tower has been repurposed as benches and tables. Joinery is designed for disassembly, ensuring materials can be recycled in the future. Gentle construction methods respect the forest ecosystem, providing access while protecting biodiversity.

Special attention is given to children and families, with educational trails and playful installations that foster curiosity, learning, and a lifelong connection to nature. By balancing access and care, the project encourages a deeper understanding of environmental conservation while promoting healthy outdoor lifestyles.

Connecting People and Nature

The pavilion demonstrates how architecture can enhance rather than dominate the landscape, creating spaces that encourage exploration, engagement, and responsible interaction with the environment. By combining community-focused infrastructure with sustainable design principles, Trailcenter Rytterknægten strengthens the link between humans and nature, promoting both social and ecological sustainability.
