Unileão School Veterinary Hospital: A Sustainable Oasis in Juazeiro do Norte
The Unileão Veterinary Hospital blends sustainable architecture and bioclimatic design, providing advanced animal care and education in Ceará, Brazil.
The Unileão School Veterinary Hospital, designed by Lins Arquitetos Associados, is a cutting-edge facility in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, Brazil, that combines functionality, sustainability, and bioclimatic design. Spanning 5,236 m², this veterinary teaching hospital is a hub for animal care and education, emphasizing the well-being of students, staff, and animals.
Location and Purpose
Situated in the Cariri region of Ceará, the hospital serves as a key educational tool for veterinary students at Unileão University. It operates 24/7, offering specialized services for both small and large animals, including:
- Hospitalization areas.
- A fully equipped surgical center.
- Physiotherapy and imaging facilities.
- Research labs and classrooms.
- Paddocks and animal wards.

Sustainable Architectural Design
Innovative Use of Terrain
The original sloping site was transformed into two plateaus, separated by a four-meter elevation difference. These plateaus are connected by stepped retaining walls that integrate lush gardens, ensuring safety and promoting a visually harmonious design.

Passive Cooling and Ventilation
The facility incorporates six building blocks, spaced apart to maximize natural cross ventilation. These blocks are surrounded by gardens that regulate temperature, creating a cooler microclimate, especially during the region's dry season.

Dynamic Facades
The hospital’s facades use modulated aluminum and glass frames in vertical, uneven bands. This design not only enhances aesthetics but also optimizes natural lighting for interior spaces.

Sun Protection and Energy Efficiency
Ceramic Brick Sunshade
A standout feature is the seven-meter-high ceramic brick sunshade, designed to shield the interiors from intense sunlight. Its wavy design adds stability and complements the curved elements of the deck. Positioned on the west facade, it also separates public and private areas, enhancing functionality.

Materials and Bioclimatic Strategies
The hospital employs passive bioclimatic strategies, such as:
- Shaded walkways and open green spaces to reduce heat gain.
- Durable materials like solid ceramic bricks for thermal insulation.

A Functional and Welcoming Space
This veterinary hospital is not just a place for education and animal care—it’s a welcoming oasis in the semi-arid climate of Ceará. Thoughtfully designed gardens, shaded paths, and open spaces create an environment that promotes comfort and well-being for its users.

Key Features of Unileão Veterinary Hospital
- Sustainable architecture tailored to a semi-arid climate.
- Passive cooling and cross-ventilation for energy efficiency.
- Integration of green spaces to foster a pleasant microclimate.
- Functional spaces for veterinary education and research.

The Unileão School Veterinary Hospital is a remarkable example of sustainable design that meets both environmental and educational needs, serving as a model for future projects in similar climates.
