Upstanding Coffee by T-FP – Blending Heritage and Contemporary Design in Seoul
Upstanding Coffee by T-FP blends industrial stainless steel and warm plywood, preserving Haebangchon’s history with modern, adaptive coffee shop design.
Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Haebangchon, Seoul, Upstanding Coffee by T-FP Architects redefines the essence of a modern coffee shop while preserving the authentic character of its historical context. Situated in the former Shinheung Market, a site once known for reckless urban development, the design team embraced the challenge of creating a youthful and dynamic coffee brand environment without erasing the layers of history embedded in the building.

Design Approach and Concept
Instead of inserting an entirely new structure, T-FP focused on adaptive reuse by retaining the original spatial framework and integrating fresh finishes. The design goal was to narrate a new story of modern coffee culture while honoring the local identity and environmental context of Haebangchon. The concept highlights a harmonious contrast between raw, timeworn surfaces and sleek modern materials, symbolizing the fusion of tradition and innovation.

Spatial Transformation and Functional Solutions
The original structure presented several challenges, including limited space, structural deficiencies, and outdated features. T-FP first addressed safety issues to ensure a comfortable and secure experience for visitors. Rather than hiding imperfections, the design preserves the visible traces of time—cracks, textures, and marks—transforming them into storytelling elements that echo the neighborhood's history.
To visually expand the 78 m² interior, the architects drilled through floor slabs and created vertical connectivity. The introduction of a spiral staircase, replacing the steep old stairs, not only improves functionality but also serves as a striking sculptural centerpiece. This staircase unites all floors, symbolizing both movement and the brand’s bold, upward spirit.

Materiality and Finishes
The main materials include handcrafted vibration-finished stainless steel and lauan plywood, chosen for their ability to express a modern yet warm aesthetic. The stainless-steel doors and windows reinterpret the original shapes and movements of the old building’s fixtures, creating a dialogue between heritage and contemporary craft. These materials resonate with the youthful energy of Upstanding Coffee while blending seamlessly with the rugged, urban backdrop of Haebangchon.

A Holistic Brand Experience
By connecting all floors visually and functionally, T-FP transformed the once narrow, segmented layout into a cohesive, open environment. The spiral staircase stands as the architectural and conceptual heart of the coffee shop, symbolizing both the upward journey of the brand and the dynamic experience it offers its customers.
