VoltAir: A Landmark of Sustainable and Innovative Architecture in Berlin
VoltAir Berlin by J. Mayer H. Architects is a sustainable, modular office building featuring stacked glass cubes and eco-friendly design innovations.
Redefining Office Spaces with Sustainable Design
VoltAir, designed by J. Mayer H. Architects, stands as a testament to modern architectural innovation and sustainability. Located at Alexanderplatz in the heart of Berlin, this striking office complex redefines the city’s skyline with its stacked glass cubes and energy-efficient design. As a LEED Gold pre-certified Green Building, VoltAir is setting new standards in eco-friendly urban development.

A Vision Rooted in Modular and Sustainable Architecture
The design for VoltAir emerged from an invited architecture competition in 2014, originally conceived as a mixed-use space for brands, sports, and hospitality. Over time, with a shift in ownership, the concept evolved to accommodate a cutting-edge office complex while preserving its architectural integrity. The sculptural glass cube structure interacts dynamically with the Berlin skyline, blending contemporary aesthetics with functional urban design.

Innovative Facade and Construction Techniques
VoltAir's distinctive appearance is characterized by two-story glass cubes, executed as a ventilated double facade with bonded impact panes—the largest ever bonded in Germany. This groundbreaking construction required special case-by-case approvals, including pendulum swing tests, to meet safety and design standards. The staggered facade setbacks, aligned with the adjacent S-Bahn viaduct, create green terraces and loggias, seamlessly integrating the building with its surroundings.

Smart and Flexible Interior Spaces
With spacious 3-meter room heights, adaptable floor plans, and a loft-like ambiance, VoltAir fosters a highly flexible and collaborative work environment. Its exposed concrete surfaces and open technical installations emphasize a modern industrial aesthetic, making it an attractive workspace for forward-thinking companies. The layout allows for horizontal divisions and vertical connections, enabling businesses to tailor the space to their needs.

Home to Global Innovators
Thanks to its strategic location and future-proof infrastructure, VoltAir has attracted top-tier tenants, including N26, Biontech, TomTom, and Seven Senders. The building serves as a hub for innovation, drawing companies that prioritize sustainability, technology, and modern workplace dynamics.

A Benchmark for Green Building Standards
VoltAir embodies the core principles of sustainable architecture. Key eco-friendly features include:
- Green Roofs with Rainwater Management: Enhances urban climate through natural evaporation, aligning with the "sponge city" concept.
- District Heating Integration: Reduces energy consumption and reliance on non-renewable sources.
- Innovative High-Impact Bonded Panes: Contributes to passive heating and cooling, optimizing indoor climate control.
- Wind-Protected Sunshades & LED Lighting: Minimizes heat gain and reduces energy usage in office spaces.
- WiredScore Certification: Acknowledges the building’s advanced digital infrastructure, ensuring high-tech connectivity.

The Future of Sustainable Urban Development
VoltAir represents the future of office architecture, balancing aesthetics, functionality, and environmental responsibility. As Berlin continues to evolve, this landmark project underscores the importance of integrating modular construction, smart technologies, and sustainable building practices into urban design.
