It is apparent that the design team have chosen to focus on 1 aspect of the brief and really run with it. While the project effectively addresses this (i.e. the modular nature and de-constructibility of the building), other aspects of the brief have fallen short. More holistically, the project feels more like an engineered solution than an architectural one. As such, it lacks a response to place and context - i.e. as the design team has shown you can locate this building by the sea just as easily as you can on the moon!). While this has its strengths, it does fail to address the more human aspects of what a building should do - i.e. how do the spaces feel to inhabit, how do they facilitate interaction between people, how does it contribute to the civic life of the city and precinct? That being said, the technical aspects of the project have been thoroughly considered which is a testimony to the designers. It would be interesting to see how much further they could even take this, i.e. how would the modules be stacked in a 40 foot container and shipped to other locations? All in all a technically well resolved building with further room to explore place, context and human occupation.
