Revival of Last British Rotating Stage Theatre
This project portrays the last British revolving stage theatre of Asia, which is conserved by not only re-using the structure but also maintaining urban and natural balance. The fundamentals and proportions of this project will serve the cultural and emotional aspects of the people living in that area, with the help of Dovey’s “Place Attachment Theory.”
Project Media
Context and Concept
The project is situated adjacent to the Lalmonirhat railway station. It has a profound historical impact. Dovey's place attachment theory and the memory of this institution are portrayed as the concept and the holistic design approach.
Exiting Situation Analysis
The existing condition of this important structure is deteriorating rapidly and becoming increasingly poor. Proper analysis with the drawing is presented there, which was generated by a qualitative survey of the site.
Design Process
This diagram depicts the chronological process of the evaluation of design.
Masterplan and Reuse of Row houses
The master plan shows the positioning of the historical structures in red and the new structures in white. Row houses were converted into a boutique hotel because of the community's need, and also for the visitors.
Section CC' and the Entry plaza
Section CC' shows the connection between the entry zone and the row house. The middle part is sunken to depict the row houses, and the British emperor and library are designed in the sunken plaza. It interprets the impact of British rulers on the Indian subcontinent.
Form generation and Axonometric view
Form generation around the M.T. Hossain institute was carefully handled so that it doesn't dominate the main historical structure, harm the existing nature, and work as a monotonous background to highlight the M.T. Hossain. Polished Concrete is used in new buildings to highlight the red structures of British buildings.
Exploded view (institute mass) & visualizations
The programs of the institutional mass are selected according to the community's necessity and the previous M.T. Hossain's Institute's functions. Music, dance, puppet dance, sculpture, art, exhibition, and a Research facility are incorporated in the mass.
Exploded View (Underground) and visualizations
The concept of the memory is designed from the underground theatre lobby so that people can see the hazy vision of old M.T. Hossain through the water body. The new revolving stage theatre is designed underground, which is almost double the size of the existing one. And both masses beside the old mass are connected by the underground tunnel.
Section AA' and CC'
Section AA' shows the underground theatre and the visual connection from the underground theatre lobby to the old M.T. Hossain Institute. Section BB' is a perspective section which depicts the connection between the two institutional massings through the underground. It's designed to create a vista from the railway station for the travelers.
Adaptive reuse of old M.T Hossain Institute
The existing M.T. Hossain is reused by the Insertion strategy of adaptive reuse. As a result, it creates the essence of the previous one, which emphasizes Dovey's place attachment theory. The 'Kori-Borga' roofing is maintained. This old building has been turned into a multipurpose hall to accommodate the digital artists and also serves the community.
