Reviving Rizal Memorial Coliseum

The Rizal Memorial Coliseum (RMC) is a historic 5,900-seater indoor arena in Manila, Philippines built in the Streamlined Art Deco style in 1934 and designed by Juan Arellano—a pioneering Filipino Architect. It underwent a massive rehabilitation and conservation effort in 2019 for the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

The concept of the work is playing 2D graphics and 3D space. The black and white 2D strips on the wall and extend as black and white 3D wood structure. This concept also creates the Morie effect - when the viewer is seeing this sculpture and walk into different angles, the viewer is seeing the pattern changes.

They are completely stripped away and turned into the most basic collection of structural elements.
