Kerala Architecture
Architecture and residential design rooted in the climate, materials and courtyard traditions of Kerala, India, past and contemporary.
Kerala's architecture is shaped by a humid tropical climate with heavy monsoon rainfall, and its vernacular buildings respond with steep sloping roofs, deep eaves, timber construction, and courtyards that draw in light and air. Traditional houses such as the nalukettu organise rooms around an open central courtyard, a typology that continues to inform present-day practice.
Members on uni.xyz explore how these principles translate to contemporary homes and buildings, including residences that reinterpret courtyards, daylight, and family living, as well as projects that address monsoon resilience, landscape, and the balance between urban growth and natural cover.
