The Calyx

The idea behind the shape and general concept of our project was flower calyx. During the conceptual design stage we mainly focused on the overall structure of the calyx and tried to geometrize it. After many sketches and model samples the shape transformed into almost transparent membrane which stands for cover for the wood construction underneath. We wanted it to be airy but at the same time strong layer that can stand for walls. As for the wood our aim was to keep it as open and spacious as possible. Columns placed in circle are the main supporting structure then from the spaces between the columns we placed two footings creating spiral stairs. Between the columns we placed shelves with books. The place to read is not only defined by the placement of shelves or table with chairs. Having the possibility to take your book to the rooftop or the lowest floor gives you a chance to spend time more pleasantly.

Everyone likes to read in their own way that’s why on the rooftop you can lay on the stretched mesh with the beautiful view of the sky or you can use the sitting area on the second floor. You can even use the stairs as a seat if it doesn't bother other readers. Keeping the structure flexible to the user allows to create space that will be convenient for different people and their reading habits. We didn’t want to confine to only one reading space but to use the whole construction and its elements to ensure comfort while spending time with a book.

Design Process

In the beginning stage the calyx looked more like enormous funnel without the entrance. First idea was to have the whole corpus as cover for stairs and only the top would have sitting/resting area. Our creative process mainly focused on sketching the proper shape of the cover but also searching for the proper name of this membrane like structure. Finally we referred to it as calyx and compared it to flower. That’s when the ideas started to bloom and shape into the final model.

The lowest layer is stretched and attached to the columns creating the flower like shape. On the first floor the cover is touching the edge of the ground and climbing upwards acting as wall. The same technique is applied to the second floor and then the roof. The only difference is on the roof where it’s attached to top part of the column creating the same flower like shape. There is no additional ceiling or cover at the top. We left the  top floor open allowing people to gaze at the sky while reading and plunging into the extraordinary world of books.

The whole structure was specially raised on poles to have the membrane solid and closed. Making the entrance from the bottom allowed us to avoid unnecessary holes in the cover. While entering the building we also wanted to make the readers feel like turning up in a completely different environment, among the magic of books and soft fabric walls.

First attempts to create a model were based on the use of white tights and two wooden rims. We connected the hoops with metal wires that pretended to be columns. At that time we only had 4 columns twisted and arranged without much thought. The first model looked like a funnel but it was necessary to see how the structure would hold and compose on a rough construction. The second one looked much more like our initial thought. We used the same method of connecting the rims, but we also added supporting poles for the membrane to stretch how intended.

Only after our attempts with spatial model we tried to repeat it in the 3D program. It was much better to focus on the trials and errors of our design in the program because of the complicated structure. This process allowed us to refine the details that we missed earlier and correct them accordingly. Due to these efforts our project went through many good changes for the benefit of the user.

Light Materials

Three main materials used for whole structure are polyester fibre, mesh made of strong white string, wood and steel. The polyester fibre is used for the membrane allowing the daylight to pass through. Using mesh on the highest floor enabled us to create flexible seating area for readers. Having this as an alternative for regular benches or chairs. Choosing this solution readers can just sit back breathe and listen to the calming sounds of nature while watching the passing clouds in the sky. The steel stair treads are not as heavy and solid as usual metal stairs that’s why we decided to use steel in this form. Wood is very efficient and solid material. Therefore it brings warmth and cosiness to the interior  therefore it's mainly used for the inner construction. Having the natural feel of the wood mixed with the smell and softness of the books creates restful atmosphere.

Our main goal while choosing the right medium for building elements was not to use too heavy materials which would burden the library not only structurally but also visually. It is commonly known materials have a great influence on emotions and senses especially when spending a lot of time in one place. Having that in mind we concentrated on designing light and natural pavilion like structure to put readers at ease while enjoying a good book.

The Purpose

Our main objective was to create structure that won’t take much space and will fit in the natural landscape. From the start we knew that the library should merge with nature and create cosy and pleasant environment. Having walls semi-transparent you can still get the feeling of being surrounded by nature and not overwhelmed by tight walls like in ordinary libraries. It’s always different reading outside whether it is in the park, on your balcony or in the garden with fresh air mixed with greenery and the rustle of leaves. Keeping the structure all covered protects readers from rain and wind, giving them a quiet place to relax. The rooftop opens up this protected space allowing others to enjoy the wind or the view of the clouds and birds in the sky.

Surrounding sounds and beautiful views can stimulate our imagination and with the right book it could take us to a whole new world. Due to these concept we wanted to include little details in our project that make reading a completely new experience. Even when you prefer to read in complete silence you can still gain something from only the visual aspect and use of noise cancelling headphones. All the factors that influence our imagination in a good environment can give us even more enjoyment and boost our serotonin level. You can even appreciate good company with your friends reading books and relaxing near nature.
