Circle of Life: A Visionary Urban Cemetery Redefining Memorial Architecture
Merging nature and remembrance in a futuristic urban sanctuary.
A New Era in Memorial Architecture
In the evolving landscape of memorial architecture, the Circle of Life project stands as a groundbreaking vision for future urban cemeteries. This innovative design concept, inspired by the themes of asylum and rebirth, reimagines the traditional cemetery as an integrated public space—one that fosters remembrance, sustainability, and urban harmony.

The Design Philosophy: A Sanctuary of Life
This visionary project is rooted in the belief that after death, the body returns to dust, but the soul ascends to become part of a greater whole—symbolized by the Tree of Life. Instead of conventional tombstones, this cemetery concept integrates nature and technology to create a dynamic, evolving space that honors the past while embracing the future.
Designed by RuBing Bai, TingTing Gao, Lei Li, and Zhu Shiyong, Circle of Life was a shortlisted entry in an international architecture competition, gaining recognition for its forward-thinking approach to urban memorial spaces.
Site and Spatial Strategy
Located in the Hongkou district of Shanghai, the site is strategically positioned between a residential area and bustling commercial streets. Currently a parking lot, this space is envisioned as a multifunctional urban oasis where parking facilities coexist with an elevated cemetery that integrates green infrastructure and community interaction.
The spatial structure of Circle of Life is designed to be adaptable, blending homogeneous and changeable elements. The Tree of Life, the central feature, serves as both a physical and symbolic element, with cascading water curtains, memory rings, and projection technology to display tributes to the deceased.

Redefining Urban Cemeteries with Smart and Sustainable Design
The project embraces smart and sustainable principles by digitizing memorials and using space-efficient solutions. Ashes are stored beneath the Tree of Life, while interactive memory blocks and electronic displays commemorate individuals in an immersive way. This approach breaks the conventional model of headstones, making memorial spaces more accessible and adaptable to population growth.
Furthermore, sustainability is at the core of this design, integrating:
- Green roofs and urban vegetation to enhance biodiversity.
- Water features for a calming, reflective atmosphere.
- Flexible public spaces that serve as both remembrance areas and social gathering spots.
A Universal Vision for Memorial Spaces
This project reflects a future where architecture and spirituality merge to create inclusive, adaptable memorials. By transforming cemeteries into public parks, Circle of Life envisions a world where remembrance is not confined to a static tombstone but becomes a living, breathing part of urban life.
As faith and cultural practices continue to evolve, this architectural concept offers a harmonious blend of nature, community, and technology—a true rebirth of urban cemeteries.
