Huilongguan Sports and Cultural Center Architecture: A Beacon of Community Life
This article explores the Huilongguan Sports and Cultural Center's architecture, showcasing its innovative design and community impact.
Located in the bustling Huilongguan residential area in Beijing, the Huilongguan Sports and Cultural Center is a milestone in urban public architecture. Designed by DAQI ARCHITECTS and the China Architecture Design & Research Group, this sprawling 95,842 m² facility merges sports, culture, and green spaces, creating an inclusive and vibrant hub for over 400,000 residents.

Completed in 2023 as part of Beijing’s "Huitian Action Plan," the center addresses the need for cultural and sports amenities in this densely populated district, offering a harmonious blend of functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal.

An Architectural Vision for Community Engagement
The Huilongguan Sports and Cultural Center is conceived as an "open and inclusive" space, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor environments. The facility is divided into two main sections: a sports and fitness center and a cultural and arts center. These sections, complemented by an adjacent sports park, foster a dynamic synergy between active recreation and cultural enrichment.

Sports and Fitness Facilities: A Comprehensive Offering
The sports center spans approximately 38,000 m², featuring 11 state-of-the-art facilities. These include badminton courts, an ice-skating rink, a climbing gym, swimming pools, table tennis and basketball courts, tennis courts, a gym, a boxing gym, an archery range, and an athletics field.

Each space is designed to cater to diverse fitness needs, while the inclusion of a digital exhibition hall, known as the "cockpit," adds a technological edge to the facility. The 400-meter outdoor sports track further extends opportunities for athletic pursuits, creating a well-rounded environment for physical activity.

Cultural and Arts Center: A Hub for Creativity and Connection
The cultural and arts center occupies about 25,000 m², providing a variety of amenities that enrich the community's cultural life. Highlights include a grand theater with 816 seats and a smaller theater with 288 seats, both equipped to host concerts, musicals, dramas, and conferences.

The design of the grand theater emphasizes acoustic and visual harmony, with pleated white decorative walls and vibrant red seating creating an immersive experience. Complementing the theaters are spaces like a library, a bookstore, dining and entertainment areas, and "third spaces" that invite social interaction and creativity.

Sustainable Design Principles
The Huilongguan Sports and Cultural Center exemplifies sustainable architecture, adhering to green building principles of the new era. The design employs passive techniques to optimize lighting and ventilation. Skylights, high side windows, and strip windows enhance natural illumination, while ventilation facilities ensure a comfortable indoor environment during transitional seasons.

The use of light gray, wood-like concrete panels for exterior walls, combined with large glass curtain walls, establishes a balance between elegance and functionality. This design reduces energy consumption while creating a welcoming civic venue.

Structural Innovation and Advanced Technology
The architectural design features a steel structure frame, large-span steel trusses, and a double-layer grid system. In the library, an 18-meter-high cable curtain wall and a 7-meter cantilevered truss create a visually stunning and structurally sound space.

With an assembly rate of 100%, the project integrates mechanical and electrical systems separately from the structural body, ensuring operational efficiency. BIM technology is applied throughout the design, production, and construction processes, enabling precision and innovation.

Harmonious Integration of Nature and Architecture
The design thoughtfully incorporates green elements, connecting the northern sports park with the center's interiors. The library, with its four-story atrium, brings lush greenery indoors, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. At night, the glass curtain wall transforms the library into a glowing lantern, symbolizing the center’s role as a beacon of cultural life.

Multi-level indoor and outdoor corridors, platform squares, and landscaped slopes enhance the organic flow between spaces. This integration ensures that the architecture harmonizes with its natural surroundings, fostering a sense of vitality and community.

A Space for the Future
The Huilongguan Sports and Cultural Center is a testament to modern public architecture that serves both functionality and aesthetic value. By addressing the community's needs and embracing sustainable practices, it stands as a model for urban design that prioritizes human connection, ecological responsibility, and cultural enrichment.
