Innovative Community Architecture in China: The PAPER House by VIASCAPE
An innovative community project blending architecture, public participation, and nature to create a multifunctional, socially engaging space in Pudong.
The PAPER House, designed by VIASCAPE, is a pioneering project located in Dongbo Yuan, Pudong, China. This 21 m² community space represents a groundbreaking approach to community architecture through innovative design, public participation, and integration with the natural environment. Built in collaboration with residents and local authorities, the PAPER House is a testament to how thoughtful design can transform informal structures into cohesive, functional community spaces.

Revitalizing Dongbo Yuan: From Pavilion to PAPER House
A Dilapidated Starting Point
Initially, the site featured a timber pavilion used for card and chess games. Over time, the space expanded organically through informal renovations, but this led to structural instability and safety concerns. Recognizing the need for renewal, the Hudong Sub-district office enlisted VIASCAPE to redesign the space.

The PAPER House Concept
Modular Design and Spatial Fluidity
The PAPER House redefines space within its compact 60 m² site. By utilizing a 1.5x1.5m spatial module, VIASCAPE created a seamless integration of interior, exterior, and transitional spaces. The design preserves the five existing cedar trees, offering shaded areas that enhance the spatial experience. Residents can "tour" the space rather than merely use it, fostering a dynamic engagement with their surroundings.

Structural Innovation
Unlike conventional construction methods, the PAPER House relies on 30mm-thick prefabricated steel sheets as its primary material. These sheets were assembled on-site within two weeks, minimizing disruption and reducing construction waste. The "paper-thin" aesthetic inspired the project's name, symbolizing lightness and adaptability.

Public Participation: A Collaborative Approach
A Community-Driven Design Process
The PAPER House embodies the principles of public participation. Residents contributed to decisions about layout and color themes, ensuring the space resonated with their needs and preferences. This process fostered emotional connections between the community and the structure.

Addressing Challenges
During construction, concerns arose from a resident whose view was partially obstructed by the initial design. VIASCAPE responded by revising the plan, reducing the footprint, and incorporating a low-impact structure under the tree canopy. This compromise demonstrated the project's commitment to inclusivity and collaboration.

Informality Meets Innovation
Blurring the Lines Between Landscape and Architecture
The PAPER House is not merely a building but a landscape installation, blending seamlessly with its environment. The structure's open boundaries and integration with existing trees emphasize its role as a shared space for community interaction.

Encouraging Community-Led Modifications
While the PAPER House is primarily an open structure, residents have suggested enclosing it during winter. Rather than impose a rigid solution, VIASCAPE proposes guiding residents to use safe materials for temporary insulation, turning informal construction into a community-building activity.

A Catalyst for Social Interaction
The PAPER House serves as more than a physical space; it is a hub for community governance and social engagement. Its design not only meets immediate functional needs but also acts as a springboard for future activities and collaborations within the neighborhood.

The PAPER House showcases how innovative design, public participation, and environmental sensitivity can transform small urban spaces into vibrant community hubs. VIASCAPE's project sets a precedent for sustainable, inclusive architecture that adapts to the evolving needs of its users while respecting local contexts.
