Mashup Bar Restaurant and Microbrewery by Vous Architecture & Design – A Transparent Culinary and Brewing Experience in Nantes

Mashup Bar Restaurant and Microbrewery in Nantes, France, designed by Vous Architecture & Design, redefines the relationship between dining, brewing, and architectural transparency. Completed in 2024 within a 268 m² double-height commercial space at the ground level of the Nantes Design School, the project transforms an empty glass-fronted site into a vibrant social hub that celebrates craftsmanship, process, and community.

A Concept Rooted in Transparency and Craft
At the heart of the design is the idea of transparency—both literal and conceptual. The existing space is bordered by four fully glazed façades, creating a visual dialogue between interior activity and the surrounding urban landscape. Mashup’s program, an insertion restaurant, bar, and microbrewery operated by Tête Haute, naturally aligns with this openness. Every area of production—brewing, cooking, preparation, service—is made accessible through sightlines, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to honesty, skill, and local identity.

Exposed Brewing Process as Architectural Feature
The northern façade showcases one of Mashup’s most striking elements: seven stainless steel brewing tanks, prominently displayed behind the glass. Four of these tanks dramatically elevate the bar experience by being suspended six meters above the counter, transforming essential equipment into sculptural icons. This innovative placement celebrates local craft beer culture while anchoring the space with a bold, industrial aesthetic.

A Sunlit Open Kitchen Framed by Rounded Aluminum Shells
On the southern side, the kitchen becomes a performative stage bathed in sunlight. Encased within a rounded, aluminum-clad atrium, the kitchen’s transparency bridges production and hospitality. Chefs cook facing the sun, engaging guests visually and spatially. This luminous zone contrasts beautifully with the metallic brewing machinery, creating a dynamic rhythm between warm culinary activity and precise stainless-steel engineering.

A Fluid Organic Ribbon Connecting Production Zones
Running through the ground floor is a continuous organic ribbon, a sculptural architectural element that guides movement and links the brewery to the kitchen. This fluid form organizes the spatial sequence while grounding the experience in a narrative of flow and connection.
A lite-earth wall forms the backdrop to the glowing stainless-steel bar, where locally sourced food and freshly brewed beer are served. The double-height central hall amplifies the sense of openness, allowing natural light and interior activity to interact across levels.

A Mezzanine Wrapped in Warm Wood and Soft Geometry
Above the bustling ground floor sits a welcoming mezzanine, distinguished by a wooden sloping ceiling that brings warmth and intimacy. Accessed via a sculptural steel staircase, the mezzanine echoes the gentle curves of the glazed façade. This turquoise-toned architectural ribbon extends upward, inviting guests to explore elevated views of both the bar and the brewery.
