Plantando Semillas Community Center: A Model for Community Transformation | Taller ACÁ Architecture
The Plantando Semillas Community Center is a transformative space in Guatemala, fostering community growth, unity, and sustainable architecture.
The Plantando Semillas Community Center, designed by Taller ACÁ, stands as a beacon of transformation in an informal context near the municipal landfill of Guatemala City. This architectural masterpiece is more than just a building—it is a symbol of hope and unity, serving as a dedicated space for families within the community.

A Vision for Social and Environmental Change
Promoted by Planting Seeds International, the Community Center aims to enhance the surrounding environment by providing a dignified space where community members can thrive. This project emerged as a result of active collaboration between the local community and the Planting Seeds organization, focusing on human-centered design that fosters personal and social growth.
The design process was deeply rooted in participatory workshops, ensuring that the community's voice was central to shaping the final space. Through these workshops, the team explored vital aspects, such as mapping vulnerable areas, identifying potential spaces, defining user profiles, and selecting materials that would resonate with local needs. The design evolved through three core phases:
- Knowing: Understanding the context and challenges of the area.
- Designing: Shaping spaces that cater to community needs and defining essential architectural elements.
- Validating: Confirming proposals and ensuring they meet the community’s expectations.

Architectural Design: Integrating Space and Functionality
The Plantando Semillas Community Center integrates seamlessly with its environment, adapting to the unique morphology of the land. The structure's brick architecture and volumetry reflect a harmonious balance with the natural surroundings while providing a robust and functional space for various community activities.

Multifunctional Spaces to Empower the Community
The building is designed with multi-level functionality, offering spaces for education, recreation, and social engagement. The first level includes an office and a flexible space that can accommodate a variety of community events. The second level features a classroom, dance room, and playroom, enhancing the educational and recreational experience for residents. The third level is home to a multi-purpose court, perfect for sports and community gatherings, promoting social cohesion.

Community-Driven Material Selection
The selection of building materials was a crucial step in the design process and was made collectively with the community. The primary materials—clay brick, concrete, and green accents—were chosen for their durability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of maintenance. The local use of brick ensures that the building remains sustainable and rooted in the local culture, while the expanded metal sheet on the upper level provides ventilation and stunning panoramic views of the sports court.

A Space of Belonging and Growth
What sets this project apart is the sense of ownership and belonging that the community has developed for the Plantando Semillas Community Center. It has become more than just a building; it is a living testament to the power of architecture to transcend its physical function and serve as a symbol of unity, learning, and progress. This Community Center stands as a dynamic space that will continue to evolve as a catalyst for growth and development within the community.
