UNI International Architecture Design Awards - Public Building
Public Architecture ‘20 - Result Story
Background
Rapid and unchecked urban development has meant that today more than 50% of the global population live in cities. While questions of poverty and insufficient resources arise, social isolation is a real concern in the modern city.
A medley of cultures, how can cities ensure the protection of all their identities and preserve the standards of urban life? Can the tangible and intangible concepts of culture grow to become a collective identity of the culture and the community?
Additionally, building on culture as a resource for sustainable development and increased community participation, can we say that the promotion of cultural expressions through art and performance become the pillars of sustainable urban development, thus building cities that are safe and resilient.
Focusing on the most basic of frameworks (typologies) of built spaces, UNI introduces Architecture (A- Z).
Challenge
‘P for Public Architecture’ aimed to bring together global design talents that explore one of our most primary needs as a population.
The challenge invited entries of modern learning spaces that ranged from pavilions to galleries to everything in between, this theme aimed to recognize spaces that have evolved with the utmost understanding of its user groups, their function, its adaptability, and its environmental responsibility.
Some of the Best of competition projects are as follows:

By: Anagram Architects
Description: The Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) is the largest contemporary art festival in Asia, held once every two years, in abandoned factories and warehouses repurposed as galleries and cafes, in Fort Kochi-Mattancherry, in Kerala, South India. People’s Choice: Beyond the Aquarium
By: Jannatun Nayeem Nowshin
Description: Aquarium usually talks about the ocean but we forget it’s the river that leads to the ocean. So for a country like Bangladesh, where 230 rivers are flowing all over the country, the Aquarium has to be rethought completely. Because it has to tell the whole story, not half of it, for us to understand as a riverine country how much we are dependent on rivers.

Jury Commendation: Peace pavilion
By: Cherine Husseini & kasif Hasnaen

Description: Contemplation, memory, and compassion are the values that commemorative architecture must convey in order to build a better world. Sedhiou, Senegal, Africa.

Jury Commendation: V-Park, Abandoned Railway Renovation
By: Wujingting Zeng
Description: A railway built-in 1952 in the center of my hometown will be moved outside the city, and reduce the adverse impact of the railway on the city. When the railway is removed, there will be a vacant area to be updated in the city center. I made a proposal to use this space and the special landform to improve the infrastructure and add vitality to this city.
