Revolutionizing Prison Architecture: The Funnel
Transforming Prisons into Pathways – Reintegration, Rehabilitation & Renewal through Innovative Architecture.
The Funnel introduces a transformative approach to prison architecture, challenging the traditional hermetic and isolated penitentiary institutions. This innovative model, designed by Christie Chin, is a Special Mention entry in the Switching Prisons competition. The project redefines correctional facilities by integrating both offenders and the general public in a structured environment aimed at rehabilitation.

A New Paradigm in Prison Architecture
The Funnel's physical layout fosters a sense of community and mutual growth. The design incorporates a phased rehabilitation process, ensuring a smooth transition for offenders back into society. These phases include:
- Reflect – Encouraging self-awareness and responsibility.
- Reform – Providing knowledge and vocational training.
- Reintegrate – Facilitating social interaction and skill development.
- Reborn – Final transition to a productive societal role.

Why This Design Matters?
This revolutionary architectural framework seeks to break societal stigmas surrounding incarceration by providing a more holistic, progressive correctional environment. The Funnel stands as a beacon for future prison infrastructure, emphasizing reintegration over punishment.
The project aligns with modern criminological studies, advocating for an architecture that nurtures transformation, thereby reducing recidivism and enhancing public safety.
