Tree of Memory: A Sustainable Vertical Cemetery Design
Honoring the past, embracing the future—where architecture, nature, and technology create a living legacy.
Location: Shanghai, China
Description
In an era of increasing urbanization and population density, cities like Shanghai face significant challenges in balancing land use, quality of life, and sustainable development. Traditional burial spaces are becoming scarce, prompting a need for innovative solutions in biophilic architecture—a design approach that integrates nature into built environments.
The Tree of Memory project introduces a vertical cemetery combined with tree burial, reimagining the way we honor the deceased while fostering environmental sustainability. This concept views families as units, with trees serving as the link between the living and the departed. Memory capsules store the digital essence of the deceased, offering a new form of immortality through interactive technology.
By rethinking cemetery design through a biophilic approach, this project redefines the boundaries between life and death, transforming cemeteries into communal, green spaces that promote ecological balance and digital heritage preservation.

Key Features of the Tree of Memory
- Vertical Cemetery: A multi-tiered burial space that optimizes land use while integrating nature.
- Tree Burial Concept: Ashes nourish memorial trees, symbolizing a cycle of renewal and continuity.
- Memory Capsules: Digital records preserve personal histories, enabling future generations to engage with their ancestors.
- Sustainable Urban Design: The green infrastructure supports urban biodiversity and contributes to climate resilience.
- Interactive Technology: Augmented reality and data storage allow visitors to “communicate” with their loved ones.

The Tree of Memory project pioneers a transformative vision for future cemeteries, where biophilic architecture fosters a symbiotic relationship between the natural and built environments. By blending sustainability, technology, and cultural heritage, this design offers a serene, functional, and ecologically responsible alternative to conventional burial practices.
