'21 CHAIR
THE IDEA BEHIND
With the arrival of remote work, many people have realized they do not feel comfortable in their own homes: over time, our living spaces become monotonous, and the boundaries between work and rest areas get blurred.
The '21 CHAIR is an answer to our fundamental need of enjoying and appreciating our homes: the assembly of just four light elements defines an armchair that is unequivocally intended for leisure and rest, and which can be moved comfortably between our different living spaces.
Whether it is used to enjoy a drink on the terrace or to get immersed in a book in the living room, the '21 CHAIR is synonymous with rest and quality of life after a long day of work.
DESIGN STORY
What could the chair for these new times we live in be like?
To answer this question, it was first necessary to investigate what type of chair could best meet the particular needs of this new post-pandemic era. In turn, to understand this, this new historical context had to be studied: What has changed? What new needs and values have emerged?
- This pandemic has brought big changes in our lifestyles, some of which seem to be here to stay. Among the latter, the establishment of remote work and its enormous influence on the time we spend at home is one of the most remarkable ones.
- After identifying this change, it was time to elaborate a profile for whom to develop this chair: a young adult, whose occupation does not require him to be at the office regularly, who lives with his partner and children in an apartment with limited space, working in a room he shares with them every day.
- After investigating this profile, it was found that his need for time for unwinding needed to be addressed. That is when the concept of the lounge chair emerged: this type of chair is the embodiment of the concept of relaxation.
- There are numerous examples of very successful lounge chairs from earlier times. However, in the 21st century, the concept of relaxing chair requires a reinterpretation that moves away from the original definition of a lounge chair: these pieces of furniture are usually heavy and bulky, and we live in an increasingly more dynamic world, in which spaces are getting smaller and in which we like to move more between them.
- That is how the '21 CHAIR was conceived, to preserve the elementary components of a lounge chair - wide armrests, inclined seat, a bit of damping -, while keeping the weight and material use to a minimum, and ensuring a green life cycle, in accordance with another need that clearly defines our times: sustainability.
