Located in the bustling capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, Assila HQ is an architectural masterpiece by Peter Ruge Architekten. Completed in 2022, this office building spans 12,230 square meters and embodies a harmonious blend of traditional architectural forms and modern design principles. Situated near the diplomatic neighborhood of Al Safarat, the headquarters boasts easy access to key city areas and features an innovative layout designed to cater to administrative functions and office spaces.

Location and Site Context
Riyadh, the largest city in Saudi Arabia, is positioned in the historical region of Najd / Al-Yamama on a vast plateau in the Arabian Peninsula. Assila HQ is strategically located in the western part of the city, near King Khalid Road and opposite a mosque, enhancing its accessibility and visibility. The building’s proximity to the diplomatic quarter underscores its significance in housing important administrative functions.


Architectural Design and Structure
The design of Assila HQ revolves around a rectangular plot, with the building comprising two full stories, a mezzanine, and a basement. The architects meticulously analyzed traditional forms and local climatic conditions to ensure the building’s suitability for its environment. A key feature of the design is the inner courtyard, which facilitates natural ventilation and lighting, creating an intuitive spatial orientation for its users.


Functional Layout and Spatial Organization
Ground Floor
The ground floor is primarily dedicated to the Dewaniya, an essential cultural element in Saudi architecture. This area includes a spacious reception, a majlis (a traditional sitting room), and a dining area. Additionally, there is a separate entrance lobby for the office spaces, ensuring clear demarcation of public and private functions.

Upper Floors
The upper floors house the main office spaces, meeting rooms, and a canteen. The building’s volume is horizontally divided and shifted, creating a naturally shaded entrance area. This design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides practical benefits by offering shade and reducing heat gain.

Facade and Materiality
The facade of Assila HQ is a testament to the thoughtful integration of traditional and modern elements. Clad in local sandstone slabs of beige, yellow, and white, the building’s exterior exudes a sense of timelessness and regional authenticity. Vertical louvers, also clad in sandstone, provide effective sun protection and add rhythmic articulation to the facade.


Outdoor and Landscaping Features
The outdoor areas of Assila HQ are designed to complement the building's architectural ethos. The landscape includes stone slabs, rock gardens, desert plants, and palm trees juxtaposed with green lawns. The inner courtyard, also paved with stone slabs, can be flooded with water, enhancing the building's cooling and aesthetic qualities.


Sustainable Design Considerations
Peter Ruge Architekten prioritized sustainability in the design of Assila HQ. The use of natural ventilation, sun-shading louvers, and locally sourced materials contributes to the building’s environmental performance. The thoughtful layout and landscaping further enhance the building’s ability to blend seamlessly with its surroundings while providing a comfortable working environment.
