Architecture as an Active Instrument for Learning
Rethinking the School
Drawing from alternative educational approaches such as Froebel, Montessori, and Reggio Emilia, A Moving School explores movement, adaptability, and environmental engagement as foundations for learning. The proposed pedagogy maintains the core academic subjects of Taiwan’s elementary education system while organizing learning through environmental focuses that connect knowledge to physical engagement and local context.
A school should be more than a place of instruction. It should be an active participant in learning. Yet many contemporary elementary schools in Taiwan continue to reflect spatial models inherited from Japanese colonial rule and reinforced during the Martial Law era. Monumental gates, fenced campuses, repetitive classroom blocks, long single-loaded corridors, and centralized sports fields were originally designed to promote discipline, surveillance, and standardization. Although Taiwan has since become a democratic society, these architectural frameworks remain largely unchanged, continuing to shape an education system centered on fixed classrooms, rigid schedules, and teacher-directed instruction.
A Moving School proposes a prototypical elementary school that reimagines architecture as an active educational instrument. Rather than treating the school as a static container for learning, the project imagines a responsive environment that continually transforms through movement, participation, and collective decision-making. Learning therefore extends beyond the classroom into the architecture itself, allowing students to understand the world through direct engagement with space, ecology, and one another.
Learning from Alternative Pedagogies
The project begins by examining educational models that understand movement as fundamental to learning. Friedrich Fröbel's kindergarten encouraged children to discover geometry and nature through play, construction, gardening, and material exploration. Montessori education emphasized freedom of movement, self-directed learning, and carefully designed environments that support independence. Reggio Emilia regarded the physical environment as a "third teacher," continually adapting spaces in response to children's evolving interests while encouraging experimentation through transparency, flexibility, and collaboration.
Although these pedagogies differ in method, they share a common understanding: learning is embodied. Children acquire knowledge not simply through instruction but through touching, moving, observing, constructing, negotiating, and caring for their surroundings. These educational traditions establish the conceptual foundation for A Moving School, where architecture itself becomes an active participant in the learning process.
Play as an Educational Framework
Rather than reproducing these educational models directly, the thesis investigates the relationship between play and architecture. Drawing from Johan Huizinga's Homo Ludens and Roger Caillois' distinction between paidia and ludus, play is understood as a negotiation between spontaneity and structure. While playgrounds encourage open-ended exploration, schools must also provide frameworks through which curiosity develops into knowledge.
A Moving School therefore distinguishes itself from the playground. Students are encouraged to move, explore, and experiment, but these activities unfold within carefully designed pedagogical systems. Architecture neither dictates behavior nor abandons structure; instead, it creates conditions where movement becomes an educational process. The school positions play between freedom and responsibility, allowing unpredictability to coexist with intentional learning.
A School That Moves
Historically, architecture has been understood as fundamentally static, rooted to land and permanence. This thesis challenges that assumption by proposing architecture as a responsive system composed of movable elements that continually transform through use.
Sliding classrooms, rotating gardens, swinging partitions, movable greenhouses, adaptable gathering spaces, and reconfigurable landscapes alter the school's spatial organization throughout the day and across seasons. These movements are not technological novelties but educational tools. Students actively operate and negotiate these systems, learning that architecture is neither fixed nor neutral but something shaped collectively through participation, maintenance, and care.
Movement therefore becomes both the medium and the lesson. Architecture responds to environmental conditions, educational needs, and the actions of its users, allowing students to understand space as something dynamic rather than predetermined.
Environmental Pedagogy
The project retains the core academic curriculum of Taiwan's elementary education system while reorganizing learning through four interconnected environmental themes: Matter, Air, Water, and Community. Rather than separating subjects into isolated classrooms, language, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts are integrated through ecological systems and everyday experiences.
Students progress through lower, middle, and upper elementary groups that correspond to evolving developmental needs. Younger students focus on sensory observation and self-care; middle elementary students engage in collaborative experimentation; older students assume greater responsibility through environmental stewardship and community participation. Mixed-age learning further encourages mentorship, cooperation, and shared responsibility across the school.
The proposal is tested on Xizhi Elementary School in New Taipei City, where the campus is reorganized into four environmental clusters connected by a continuous elevated terrace. Beneath this canopy, spaces shift between open, semi-open, and enclosed conditions, allowing weather, light, and seasonal change to become active components of everyday learning.
Six Moments of Learning
Rather than presenting architecture as a finished object, the project demonstrates its pedagogical potential through six recurring moments experienced throughout a student's day.
The day begins in a rotary herb garden, where movable landscape elements support planting and ecological observation. Students then prepare meals in a communal kitchen that integrates cooking, dining, composting, and waste management. A rotating greenhouse allows children to adjust growing conditions according to sunlight and season while caring for crops and processing harvests. Learning continues in semi-outdoor classrooms equipped with weather stations and operable skylights, where climate itself becomes part of the curriculum. Adaptable gathering spaces host exhibitions, assemblies, and exchanges with the surrounding community, while visible rainwater infrastructures reveal cycles of collection, filtration, storage, and reuse.
Together these moments transform ordinary school routines into opportunities for environmental awareness, collaboration, and collective decision-making. Architecture continually changes alongside its users, making learning inseparable from everyday spatial experience.
Toward an Active Architecture
A Moving School ultimately argues that movement is not simply physical but social, ecological, and political. By actively shaping their surroundings, students learn that environments are produced through participation rather than authority. Rearranging classrooms becomes an exercise in democratic negotiation. Caring for gardens becomes environmental stewardship. Maintaining shared infrastructures cultivates responsibility toward both community and ecology.
Designed as a prototype rather than a singular building, the project can be adapted to both existing and future schools across Taiwan. Its movable architectural systems respond to different sites while maintaining a common educational framework. In doing so, the thesis repositions architecture from a static object to an active educational instrument—one that evolves alongside its students, responds to changing environmental conditions, and continually redefines the relationship between learning, movement, and the built environment.
