What is the aim of concept?
The vertical university aims to contribute to public health, socially and psychologically in unpredictable conditions such as a pandemic. Apart from the people in the university students, it ensures that each individual who experiences the building is a part of the university by providing permeability at the public-open areas.
How it works?
The industrial plants grown in the base section and upper elevations are used in laboratories, classrooms for students and the people who come here for treatment. Visitors can use On the ground floor for acupuncture, physical therapy, cosmetology and meditation. In addition, there is a five-storey library complex in the base. Public spaces and classrooms where the theoretical courses are taught are located on the upper floors, which are more isolated and have different typologies.
The habitats, it respects people with different family structure and social life preferences, are located in non-public spaces and it has different typology. However, as in many high-rise buildings, the top of the tower is not reserved for people who living in residences or expensive restaurants, instead of this top of the tower open to citizens’ use and it has observatory, plants which are endemic type for exhibit. To give an example of grown plants, John’s herb used in chemotherapy, Galanthus used in poliomyelitis, Abies Equi-trojani used in treatment of breathing passage etc.
Thanks to the outrigger system located next to the core for the carry of the structure and giant pots which they have different plants selected according to the changing weather conditions.
The plants grown here also meet the privacy needs of the houses separated by glass and permeable mesh surfaces.
What is the part of the building?
Parts of the building are as follows; tower (10m), habitats (each unit is 18.9m and there are 14 units so, totally 264.6m), theoretical education areas (each unit 21m and there are 5 units so, totally 105m), laboratories, library, applied education areas, greenhouse, water treatment and alternative medicine application areas (acupuncture, cosmetology etc.) at downstairs.
Vertical circulation devices serving these parts, there are 2 for habitats, there are 3 for education, there is 1 for tower and there are 2 freight elevators for load transfer. The mesh surface around the building prevents the building from overheating by allowing the harmful effects of the sun to be taken into the building in a controlled manner. Apart from the transportation networks in the core, there are a total of 6 elevators, 3 of which are on the floors where the libraries and greenhouses located, in order to prevent heavy human traffic in the base.
What are the land selection factors in?
The main topics to be considered while choosing the land are as follows for academic staff and students who come from all over the world; the city’s safeness, transportation network, gender equality, recreation areas and also most importantly key point is, there is a need for high-rise buildings in the city the increasing population density offers, although too much in the Asian continent and the American continent. Variations that can be chosen in Asia would be more suitable for alternative medicine. On these bases, it is planned to bring touristic income to the city by linking the developed alternative medicine sector in Asia with tourism.
What are the reasons that make up the form?
In Singapore, as a country located in the equatorial region has a tropical climate so double-curtain wall preferred because the building will be exposed to sunlight for a long time and plants are growing between two surfaces.
The main reasons that determine form are; It forms the walls of the building in a circular form and in accordance with the university program inside, in order to illuminate the education and habitat block as evenly as possible and to have a city vista.
What are the contributions to the future
The understanding of university life has changed after the pandemic and we are trying to improve ourselves on the internet, after all education undergoes metamorphosis and it is not just a process acquired from books, exams or teachers but a whole of experiences. Consequently, it aims to make universities begin to serve rather than being structures with certain boundaries and people with certain qualities.
