Amorepacific Headquarters: A Symphony of Design by OFF Studio
Exploring OFF Studio’s transformative interior design for Amorepacific Headquarters, blending modular modernity with Jeju Island's natural charm.
The Amorepacific Headquarters in Yongsan, Seoul, stands as a testament to architectural harmony, where the bold design by David Chipperfield integrates seamlessly with the transformative interior concepts of OFF Studio. This innovative project, completed in 2023, represents a confluence of modular precision, spatial dialogue, and brand storytelling, culminating in a space that resonates with Jeju Island's natural allure.

Architectural Context
Nestled in the iconic headquarters of Amorepacific, a masterpiece by David Chipperfield and the recipient of the 2024 Pritzker Prize, this interior design project undertakes a unique challenge: to complement the building’s structured grandeur. OFF Studio approached the design with sensitivity, preserving the modular system that defines the building’s exterior while infusing the interiors with a fresh identity rooted in Jeju Island’s essence.

A Homage to Jeju Island
Jeju Island, celebrated for its black basalt landscapes and tranquil coastline, serves as the conceptual heart of this project. The central design element, a large mass resembling a stone island, symbolizes the island’s rugged beauty. Crafted from basalt, this focal point echoes Jeju's volcanic origins. The interior further reinforces this narrative with tables and chairs arranged to mimic floating islands, offering visitors a visceral connection to Jeju’s coastal charm.

Modular Integration and Spatial Dialogue
The design emphasizes continuity by extending the building’s modular framework into the interiors. Exposed modular frames and ceilings are preserved, seamlessly linking the exterior with the interior. Smaller modular units define walls and floors, creating a rhythm that enhances the spatial experience. The planter at the entrance, carbonized wood walls, and the central service table contribute to the spatial dialogue, balancing function with aesthetics.

Materiality and Craftsmanship
Material choices underscore the project’s commitment to authenticity. The use of black basalt, carbonized wood, and structured metal grids enhances the tactile and visual experience of the space. These materials not only align with Jeju's natural elements but also integrate harmoniously with the building’s modernist ethos. The attention to detail in crafting furniture and interior elements reflects OFF Studio’s dedication to quality and storytelling.

A Spiritual Dialogue
Designing within an existing architectural icon requires more than technical skill; it demands a philosophical conversation. OFF Studio’s process involved a thoughtful balance of preservation and innovation. By retaining the essential modularity and infusing new layers of identity, the project becomes a dialogue between the original architect and the contemporary designer. This spiritual synergy is evident in the space's serene yet dynamic atmosphere.

The Amorepacific Headquarters branch designed by OFF Studio transcends conventional interior design. It celebrates the intersection of architecture and identity, where the spirit of Jeju Island meets the precision of modular modernity. This project invites visitors to experience not just a space, but a narrative deeply rooted in culture, craftsmanship, and architectural excellence.
