Creative Board: Modular Architecture for Play, Learning and Community Participation
Creative Board reimagines modular architecture as a flexible kit for play, learning and community building in temporary refugee settlements.
Creative Board explores this question through modular architecture, proposing a flexible system of components that can support play, education, gathering and community participation. Designed by Mengyang WU, the project approaches architecture as an evolving kit rather than a permanent arrangement.
Developed for temporary settlement conditions and the needs of refugee communities, Creative Board focuses particularly on children and their relationship with play, learning and social interaction. The proposal avoids complicated construction systems in favor of modules that can be cut, connected, separated and recombined according to changing circumstances.
The project was recognized as a Shortlisted entry of Re-imagining Play 2020, a competition exploring new possibilities for environments where children can play, learn and develop. Re-imagining Play 2020

Modular Architecture as an Open Framework
At the center of Creative Board is a straightforward architectural principle: one component does not need to serve only one purpose.
Instead, standardized units are treated as building blocks capable of operating independently or joining together to produce larger configurations. The project drawings describe this as an evolution of unit modularity, showing how relatively simple geometric elements can progressively become play structures, furniture, enclosures and learning spaces.
This approach to modular architecture allows the physical environment to change without requiring an entirely new construction each time its program changes.
A module might initially support a game or recreational activity. Combined with several other pieces, it can form seating, an activity enclosure or a larger communal arrangement. Reorganized again, the same architectural vocabulary can contribute to an educational space.
The result is architecture that is intentionally unfinished in functional terms. Its identity comes from the system governing its transformation rather than from one fixed final composition.
The Evolution of Unit Modularity
The project diagrams illustrate how basic planar and structural elements evolve into increasingly complex configurations.
Individual frames, platforms and supports are first tested as isolated units. Through cutting, folding, rotating and connecting these elements, new spatial functions begin to emerge. The drawings demonstrate a series of play-oriented configurations including slides, seesaws, swings and other interactive structures.
Additional modules introduce different forms of engagement. A periscope-like component encourages observation and curiosity, while a net-rope structure creates opportunities for balance, movement and physical play.
The significance of these elements lies not only in the individual activities they provide. Their real architectural value comes from their ability to belong to a shared modular system.
Creative Board therefore turns playground equipment into part of a broader architectural grammar.
Modular System I: Combining Simple Components
One of the project's main studies, identified as Modular System I, investigates repetition and combination.
The module size is kept fixed, simplifying reproduction while allowing multiple units to create increasingly large spatial structures. The system is designed to accommodate different scales of occupation, from reading and conversation to learning, group gatherings and larger social activities.
Rather than designing a separate architectural object for every program, Creative Board develops a limited family of components that can generate multiple outcomes.
This is one of the central advantages of modular architecture within the project. Standardization does not necessarily produce uniformity. Here, repetition becomes a tool for variation.
A small number of components can produce benches, enclosures, activity stations, semi-defined rooms and larger collective environments depending on how many pieces are available and how they are assembled.
The system can therefore respond to the scale of a site and the needs of its users without abandoning its underlying construction logic.
Designing Architecture Around Participation
Creative Board is also a proposal for participatory architecture.
Its construction logic is deliberately accessible. The project describes a system without complicated structures, using convenient cutting and splicing methods so local people can participate in creating and adapting the environment.
This participation changes the role of architecture.
Instead of residents simply receiving a completed space, they become involved in determining how that space operates. Modules can be assembled according to activities, modified when those activities change and combined differently as new needs emerge.
The project therefore treats construction as part of community life rather than merely a process preceding it.
Architecture becomes something people interact with physically and socially.
That principle is especially important within environments where needs may change rapidly and where permanent spatial arrangements may not adequately respond to fluctuating populations or evolving community requirements.
Play as a Tool for Exploration
The project begins with children's play, but its understanding of play extends beyond conventional playground equipment.
Creative Board considers play an opportunity for curiosity, communication, experimentation and discovery.
Its modular structures do not prescribe a single experience. Instead, they provide enough information for children to understand how a component might be used while leaving enough ambiguity for alternative interpretations.
This open-endedness encourages exploration.
A child can encounter a slide, swing or seesaw as a recognizable activity, while other modules invite observation, balance, movement and interaction. When these pieces are arranged together, the playground becomes a changing landscape rather than a collection of isolated objects.
The architecture supports physical activity while also encouraging children to understand space through movement and participation.
From Play Modules to Educational Architecture
A particularly important part of Creative Board is the transition from recreation to learning.
The project's Modular System II demonstrates how components associated with games can be transformed into architectural elements for educational environments.
Panels can be moved, repositioned and recombined. Individual pieces evolve into partitions, seats, activity surfaces and spatial boundaries. By manipulating these elements, the same modular family can create settings for both informal play and more structured educational activities.
The proposal rejects the assumption that learning and recreation need entirely separate environments.
Instead, it suggests that children can discover skills and ideas through games, experimentation and interaction.
Education can therefore emerge naturally from play.
The diagrams eventually show a combined education space, where individual modules collectively establish an enclosed but flexible environment for learning and community activities.
This transition from playground to classroom demonstrates the broader potential of modular architecture. A system originally organized around recreation can become social infrastructure simply through reconfiguration.


Architecture That Responds to Temporary Conditions
Creative Board acknowledges the uncertainty associated with its intended context.
Temporary settlements can involve changing populations, unstable boundaries, limited resources and constantly shifting requirements. A conventional permanent architectural solution may struggle to respond effectively to these conditions.
The project therefore proposes a system that can be disassembled, moved, assembled again and altered.
Instead of attempting to eliminate uncertainty through rigid construction, Creative Board incorporates change directly into its design logic.
Modules can operate individually when only a small intervention is required. Additional units can be introduced when more capacity is needed. Configurations can also be reduced, separated or relocated as conditions change.
This makes flexibility a fundamental architectural principle rather than an optional feature.
Creating Spaces for Different Users
Although children are central to the proposal, Creative Board also considers the broader community surrounding them.
Different age groups have different requirements for safety, supervision, activity and independence. Younger children may require closer involvement from adults, while older children and teenagers may interact with the modules more independently.
The modular system allows these distinctions to influence spatial configuration.
Seating can be integrated with play equipment. Activity zones can be positioned alongside spaces for observation. Larger configurations can accommodate collective events, while smaller assemblies can support quieter learning or recreational activities.
As a result, the project does not define one universal playground.
Instead, it establishes a framework through which different user groups can continually create appropriate arrangements.
Reuse and Sustainability Through Modularity
The project also connects modular design with sustainability.
Because individual components are intended to be reusable and reconfigurable, changing a program does not automatically require replacing an entire structure.
A play installation can be dismantled and its units incorporated into another configuration. A gathering space can expand or contract. Educational modules can be rearranged as requirements change.
This principle extends the usefulness of each component.
Rather than seeing sustainability only through material selection, Creative Board considers the duration and adaptability of architectural use.
The most sustainable component may sometimes be the one that can remain relevant after its first purpose has disappeared.
Through standardized dimensions, repeatable construction and multiple possible configurations, the system seeks to reduce the relationship between architectural change and physical waste.
Building Community Through Modular Architecture
Perhaps the most significant ambition of Creative Board is social rather than formal.
The project considers architecture capable of creating a secondary connection between residents and their environment. When people can assemble, move and reinterpret the elements around them, space becomes something negotiated collectively.
That negotiation can encourage communication.
People decide where components belong, which activities are needed, how spaces should connect and how existing arrangements should evolve.
The architecture becomes a platform for collaboration.
Within communities shaped by displacement and uncertainty, these small acts of participation may give residents more agency over their immediate environment. Creative Board does not attempt to resolve every social condition through design. Instead, it establishes a physical framework that allows residents to make more decisions themselves.
A Playground That Can Become Something More
The project's visual progression captures its core idea effectively.
What begins as a collection of frames, platforms, panels and structural pieces gradually becomes a family of recognizable play devices. Those devices then spread through a settlement as individual activity stations. Eventually, the same logic creates larger configurations that resemble classrooms, social spaces and community infrastructure.
This evolution is central to the project's understanding of modular architecture.
The module is not treated as a miniature building repeated endlessly. It is treated as a unit of possibility.
Its meaning changes depending on orientation, combination, quantity and context.
One module can support play.
Several modules can create a gathering space.
A larger combination can establish an educational environment.
The architectural system grows with the activities around it.
Designing for Inclusiveness Rather Than Completion
Creative Board's design process deliberately avoids producing an overly specific final answer.
Instead, it embraces what the project describes as a form of inclusiveness, providing a general framework while allowing multiple possibilities to emerge through use.
This strategy gives residents space to explore.
Rather than presenting users with a highly predetermined environment, the system offers enough structure to support safe activity while preserving the possibility of adaptation.
The distinction is important.
Flexibility in architecture is sometimes understood simply as moving furniture inside a fixed building. Creative Board approaches flexibility at a deeper level. The architectural components themselves can change relationships, functions and spatial boundaries.
The user is therefore not merely occupying architecture.
The user participates in producing it.
Creative Board and the Future of Flexible Play Spaces
Creative Board demonstrates how a relatively simple system can address several architectural questions simultaneously: How can play and education overlap? How can communities participate in constructing their surroundings? How can architecture remain useful when conditions change? And how can standardized components generate diverse rather than repetitive spaces?
Its answer lies in modularity.
Through reusable components, flexible combinations and participatory construction, the project transforms a playground into a broader spatial system capable of supporting learning, interaction and community activity.
The proposal by Mengyang WU suggests that meaningful architecture does not always require complexity. Sometimes its strength comes from establishing clear rules that allow users to create complexity themselves.
As a shortlisted project in Re-imagining Play 2020, Creative Board presents play not as an isolated recreational function, but as a catalyst for education, communication and collective participation.
Most importantly, it reframes modular architecture as an architecture of possibility.
Instead of determining exactly how people should use space, Creative Board gives them components, connections and opportunities to decide what that space can become.
