Fran Silvestre Arquitectos: Villa Lago

Set in the exclusive residential enclave of Alcobendas in Madrid, Villa Lago by Fran Silvestre Arquitectos redefines contemporary luxury living through a seamless integration of architecture and landscape. Designed in 2024 and spanning 1,106 square meters, this modern Spanish villa abandons the traditional compact volume in favor of an ascending composition that maximizes contact with the surrounding garden and nearby lake views.

Architecture that Blurs Boundaries

Villa Lago is conceived as a fluid architectural gesture that dissolves the boundaries between interior and exterior. Rather than imposing a singular monolithic structure, the architects propose a series of elongated, curved volumes that gently unfold across the site. This ascending layout enhances the perimeter relationship with nature, creating continuous visual and physical connections with the landscape.

The project resolves a compelling dichotomy: it is both geometric and organic. While its structure is rigorously precise, the spatial experience feels intuitive and natural, as if the house has effortlessly settled into its environment. This balance between rational geometry and organic perception defines the villa’s architectural identity.

Pavilion and Courtyard: Ancestral Archetypes Reimagined

The design merges two timeless architectural archetypes:

• The Pavilion – Open, centrifugal, and outward-looking.
• The Courtyard – Sheltered, intimate, and contemplative.

Through longitudinal, gently curved volumes arranged with a generous radius, the architects generate five distinct gardens. These semi-open courtyards each possess their own atmosphere and identity, multiplying visual perspectives and ensuring that nature remains an active presence throughout the home.

This strategy echoes the elongated residential explorations of architects like Glenn Murcutt and Stéphane Beel, where architecture becomes a mediator between climate, site, and inhabitant. The gardens are intentionally designed to evolve over time, welcoming large tree species that will further enhance the spatial experience as they mature.

Ascending Spatial Organization

The program unfolds vertically following the natural topography:

• Lower Level: Pool area and guest rooms, offering privacy and direct landscape access.
• Intermediate Level: Daytime living spaces oriented toward the lake, maximizing panoramic views and natural light.
• Upper Level: Night quarters positioned within a bridge-like volume, creating a dramatic shaded terrace beneath.

At the intersection of these volumes lies the central communication core, a vertical connector that integrates circulation while reinforcing spatial continuity. This core becomes both structural anchor and experiential pivot, binding architecture and nature into a cohesive whole.

Proportion as the Essential Principle

Beyond form and landscape integration, Villa Lago ultimately emerges from a fundamental architectural principle: proportion. The meticulous calibration of widths and spatial relationships generates harmony and balance throughout the project. Every dimension is carefully tuned to achieve equilibrium between openness and enclosure, light and shadow, geometry and landscape.
