The article explores the innovative design of Gogoland Pet Community, blending nature, architecture, and pet-friendly spaces for both pets and owners.
Gogoland Pet CommunityLocated in the picturesque Wild Island Community of Huizhou, China, Gogoland Pet Community is a groundbreaking public space designed by Informal Design. This 300 m² project transforms an old dormitory building from a rice wine factory into a vibrant pet paradise that emphasizes human-animal connections. The architecture integrates the surrounding natural environment, creating a space that fosters community, interaction, and the well-being of pets and their owners.
Architectural Vision Behind Gogoland Pet Community
Adaptive Reuse of an Old Building
The design of Gogoland Pet Community breathes new life into a building that once served as a dormitory in a rice wine factory. The transformation involved a careful balance of preserving the site's history while infusing it with modern design principles that cater to the needs of contemporary pet owners. Lead architect Sheng Wang and the Informal Design team focused on creating a seamless connection between the indoor space and the lush outdoor garden, providing a peaceful retreat for both pets and humans.

Integration of Nature and Architecture
One of the most striking features of Gogoland Pet Community is its ability to blend architecture with the natural environment. The design removed parts of the building’s walls to open the space up to the courtyard and surrounding trees. Large glass partitions allow natural light to flood the interior, fostering a connection between the indoors and the outdoors. The space feels expansive, thanks to this seamless integration of nature and architecture.

Key Features of Gogoland Pet Community
Pet-Friendly Social Space
At the heart of Gogoland Pet Community is the pet-friendly social space, designed with a focus on interaction and relaxation. The space encourages both pets and their owners to engage in joyful activities together. Thoughtfully designed furniture pieces, including fixed benches with space underneath for pets to rest, and chairs with adjustable backrests, ensure comfort for everyone. Specially designed accessories like leash holders and pet-friendly seating elevate the experience.

Functional Spaces for Pet Care
In addition to the social space, Gogoland Pet Community offers a range of functional spaces that cater to the needs of pets. These include:
- Pet Grooming Rooms: Separate rooms for dog and cat grooming, ensuring a calm and private experience.
- Pet Hotel: A dedicated area for pets who need a place to stay while their owners are away.
- Pet Service Areas: A reception area for check-ins and consultations, designed to foster a welcoming, community-oriented environment.

Seamless Transition Between Interior and Exterior
The design of Gogoland Pet Community ensures a seamless transition between the interior spaces and the surrounding outdoor garden. Glass folding doors open fully, merging the indoor activity areas with the garden, where visitors can enjoy the serenity of the natural environment. This fluid connection allows pets to roam freely while their owners relax in the beautiful surroundings.
Design Aesthetics and Materials in Gogoland Pet Community
Preserving Historical Charm with Modern Touches
The existing structure of the building is preserved, maintaining its historical charm. The street-facing exterior still showcases the original gray pebbledash wall, while the interior blends warm marine plywood with pure white textured paint. This combination of materials enhances the rustic elegance of the space and helps create a soothing atmosphere for both pets and visitors.

Natural Materials and Sunlight
Materials such as cement concrete floors and wood veneers complement the building's original structure. These materials are complemented by abundant natural light, which pours in through large windows, enhancing the beauty of the space and creating a warm, inviting environment.

Gogoland Pet Community: A Space for Pets and People
Creating a Comfortable and Functional Environment
Every element of Gogoland Pet Community is designed with the comfort of pets in mind. Fixed benches provide space for pets to rest while leaving enough room underneath for them to find solace. The movable furniture, including square tables and chairs, is designed for stability, making the space both functional and safe. For pet owners, the furniture pieces include thoughtful features like leash holders and cup holders, adding convenience to the experience.

A Community-Oriented Atmosphere
The overarching goal of Gogoland Pet Community is to create a space that feels welcoming and inclusive to both pets and their owners. The open, airy design encourages interaction and community-building, making it a popular spot for pet owners to gather and socialize. The circular design motifs throughout the space help reinforce this sense of connection and unity.

The Future of Pet-Friendly Spaces
Gogoland Pet Community is not just a pet care facility; it’s a revolutionary social space that redefines the relationship between humans, pets, and the built environment. By combining thoughtful architectural design with a deep understanding of pet behavior, Informal Design has created a space that enhances the lives of both pets and their owners.
